My first Langshan from Privet hatchery went broody last spring when she was 1 yr old. She was a great sitter but on day 18 we made the mistake of leaving our young cattle dog out with the chickens and when we came home, Bijou was dead in the middle of the yard. She had no wounds on her but we are assuming that the dog tried to play with her when she didn't back down. That was a hard lesson to learn. We popped the eggs into the incubator and 3 out of 4 hatched. I think that she would have been a wonderful mama hen if she had gotten the chance.
Ohhh I am so sorry that you lost her. My favorite hen was a Delaware who went through or maybe over the fence and met the JRT next door :-( . My shipment from Privett is coming in two weeks. What did you think of their birds? I ordered from them because they had CA Greys and they are closer than any of the other hatcheries that I have found and I figured the babies wouldn't freeze coming from NM.
I am getting and sharing with two other people
5 CA Greys...supper excited. These will be my white egg layers along with any Dorkings that hatch
5 Speckled Sussex for sweet broodiness....Dorkings are also broody mamas
5 Partridge Rocks for their Partridgeness and as it turns out their broodiness too
10 EEs for obvious reasons actually getting 10 but picking my 3 out of the mix based on color, leg color and puffy cheeks
5 Black stars...don't know if I want to keep any of them I will see. I can see myself buried in eggs and as I said before I want colorful eye candy for my lawn
I like the darker brown, they look almost red brown like my red stars lay and I am interested but I think that for awhile anyway I have to hold off. Thanks though. Have yours gone broody. I hear they are good mommies.
