Okay, we have eight babies out and the incubator is getting crowded! When do you remove the babies to the brooder?

I wait until the are dry or when they are pestering the ones that just hatched. I leave a pair in so that a single does not get lonely.

Use the spray bottle trick when opening the top of the Brooder.

I took mine out three times a day. Morning, early afternoon, and bedtime. With so many babies hatching all at once my humidity was out of control, so I didn't worry about shrink wrapping.

I am thinking I want to add a Wellsummer or a Maran to my flock. Which one is friendlier and more kid friendly in temperament?

I'll be interested to hear the answer to this question. I have 2 Olive Egger hens that are 3/4 FBCM. They aren't really friendly or unfriendly and are in the middle of the pecking order. They like me when I have treats but peck hard to get them before someone else does. This spring, I have both Welsummer and Marans/Marans mix chicks in my brooders. I love the Welsummers! They are some of the sweetest chicks! I hope that they are just as sweet when they are full grown. The Marans pullets are skittish but the cockerels for the most part are little terrors. They run around the brooder chasing the other chicks and peck me when they get a chance. Once I have a firm grasp on them, they are fine. Maybe it's just their age. They are 7-11 weeks old. Most of the Marans cockerels that I have had are also early crowers!

I finally have hatched a shipped Penedesenca Chick! One was out this morning and the second was almost out.

Sadly the one that is out looks like a pullet....Just kidding you can't tell gender with Black Penes. Also, I am not a Rooster Whisperer like Happy Chooks....

I will post pictures of them tonight.

We took pictures of one of the Splash Blue Egg Layers from the UofAlabama a couple of Days ago. My oldest DD used her new Samsung Smart Phone and it was a chore getting her to email me the pictures.

These lay Blue eggs that look like the Cream Legbar eggs. I hatched 4 Blues and 3 Splash from 9 eggs:









After this picture, she dashed out into the road and under the Ford Escape. Finally she jumped up into the Wheel well and my Middle DD was able to get her.

Made my brooder today! Mom got a very large, free cardboard box...but it had no bottom, so we cut it down to size(it's about 1.5 feet tall inside now) and stretched it around a wood pallet. Used the leftover cardboard to line the top of the pallet(to support the weight of the sand that I'm using in the brooder). We doubled up a large, heavy-duty plastic liner and stapled it to the sides(plus put tape all the way along the top edge of the plastic, not only to hold it in place but also to prevent a chicken from somehow getting behind it). Put in the sand...Used 2 pieces of chicken wire from a roll of it that we already had laying around as a top. Though only 1/2 of it is on in this picture...Total cost, not including sand... $4

Sorry, don't mind the bare mattress...sheets are in the washer!

please be careful with that light. make sure it is 2 ft away from the bedding and that box in any direction. That light is going to put out some heat...

when they are dry get them out if possible but watch for zipping chicks

I have only had a few Cuckoo Marans and a few wellies but my wellies where nicer. My Marans were not mean just stayed away

Just kidding. I actually have some of my own. Plus Ron is cooking some U of A's for me and Deb is cooking some of my Empordanesa ohh plus I put 36 in lockdown later tonight

Want to know the depth of my sickness?? Two days ago I was freaking out a bit because I knew I was going to have too many chicks. Today after removing those 7 eggs from the bator I started thinking about how to replace them Oy!

Ron yours are darling....How many did you set?

To Ron and Hangtown Farms: the Penedesenca descriptions say they...like most all of the Mediterranean breeds... are flighty. I am curious what your experience is.

I also want to know a couple of things about flighty birds...It's kind of a vague description does it mean

a) fearful, an avoider of human contact
b) a bird who will hang with the flock for the most part but will fly when it feels the need or desire
c) a bird to avoid if you have neighbors with dogs and want to free range
d) a bird that can easily fly away from the above mentioned neighbor's dog
e) some of the above...please explain
f) all of the above but e

Not asking about Penedesencas specifically but flighty birds in general. I would love a couple of Campines and colored Leghorns but don't want them to be dinner for the JRT next door.

Where do you keep all of your chicks? Wish I had a garage for brooders. I am running out of space. Tell my head that though . . I just started 12 very rare colors (porcelain, buff Columbian, Dun Quail, Dun Cuckoo) of d'Anver eggs from Boggy Bottom Bantams and 8 pure W/BW Ameraucana eggs from my own birds. I am getting some awesome chicks out of my BW rooster. Much nicer than what I was getting out of his wheaten father. That is because my BW is a cross of Paul Smith and Pips&Peeps lines and I am breeding back to Paul Smith hens. Out crossing of the two lines didn't work well.

My 2 pure wheaten Ameraucana eggs hatched and 4 Golden Cuckoo Marans so far. It has been a stressful hatch with them hatching today on day 22 because of the power outage and with hatching problems from damaged air cells from shipping. They are pipping low and one pipped in the small end of the egg. I had to help that one out. Looks like two of each sex so far. They are adorable and I will post pictures when they fluff up.
