California - Northern

sounds like an adventure! nothing so wild here, but I've let Eleanor start taking her two babies outside their little enclosure for the first time:

checking out some freshly-pulled weeds

she's such a good mama

and first time outdoors from the coop -- learning to peck at things!

They look so happy!

thanks -- i got home late from school that evening, so they were only out for a half-hour or so, and usually they all come running at dusk since i give them treats -- BUT if they're in the middle of a luxurious dust bath, they will occasionally ignore me, and that's the only thing i can imagine -- she was a mostly-white chicken, so hard to miss even at dusk!
Sorry for your loss :-( It's so tough to lose a chicken you've loved. I've lost 3 roosters to coyotes so I know how you feel. Hang in there lady!

Congratulations everyone on the hatches!! I stared at my eggs willing them to pip and it worked! Haha

Zoo - let us know how he tastes! Is it weird that I want to know what a prolapsed penis looks like?!

Ali - it's not too bad opening an egg. Just in case tie a bandana over your nose! I had a hard time with the stink in the incubator when I opened up some eggs.

Haha I'm curious also! Maybe because they're hidden and I didn't even know this could happen lol

that is two nights in a row you have dreamt of hatching chicks. It is a good sign I hope. Good vibes headed your way

I dreamed last night that my son smashed the seven pretty eggs we got from Deann last night. I was so upset! I kept thinking about how they could have become chicks. Luckily they're safely tucked in the incubator. I did get a scale and am going to try weighing the eggs this time. I think I had problems with too high of humidity last go round. Right now it is at 35, so far so good. Is there some kind of guideline as to how much weight the eggs should be losing? Things I'm going to differently this time: Keep humidity lower, candled less (Day 10 and 19 is my plan (maybe 14 if there are ones I'm iffy about)), go into lockdown later. I was supposed to be getting Calico Cochin eggs in the mail, the woman said she would send them last Monday and I haven't heard anything. If they do come it will be a staggered hatch.
Processing my first duck this weekend! He was already up on the chopping block but he now has a prolapsed penis so it's speeding up supper time a little. Poor guy. I have a pic if anyone wants to see. LOL It was funny- I was like hey honey I will hold the duck and here you take my phone and take a picture of his man parts. hehe It was like saying...hey pass me the biscuits...ahhh I love farm life!
Oh, how exciting! I'm very impressed. I'd totally be interested in seeing the picture. And I can't wait to see Betty's babies! Are these with Gary?

There is not much sweeter than a broody and her babies. I would love to come up and see them if you were around. I can't wait until next spring, I'm sure we'll get a broody or two!

My broody's eggs hatched yesterday on day 20!

She only had 3 eggs and all 3 chicks hatched! I thought that they were either pure Langshans or Langshan roos over SPPR hens. Two are blue and look like Langshans and the other is almost solid black! The blue ones must have hatched from the lighter brown eggs which I thought were SPPR eggs. The black one is the one that I thought would be pure Langshan based on the egg color. I think that I was wrong! My friend did have a couple mutt black hens in the field as well as at least 1 Jersey Giant hen. The little black one must be Langshan over JG or mutt. They are adorable anyway and Precious is so happy! She lets me feel around under her and pick them up to look at them. She is a good mommy!

Congratulations!

My one Blue Silkie broody is "due" Monday, but might be a bit delayed. She keeps getting off the nest once a day to terrorize the 8 week old Ams in there, run around and eat and drink and poop.. and back she goes... very funny to watch! She has 9 pure Partridge Silkie eggs under her...

they do as well as the ones I switched out from under her and put in the incubator!
