When you reach your hand into a bin of chicks, they scatter unless you have handled them constantly. When you reach your hand into a bin of goslings, they come running to you and nibble at your fingers. (I know I shouldn't let them do that, cute when they're a week old, probably less cute when they weigh 20 pounds

)

We were lying on the rug with them, they all came up and laid down next to me, snuggled up against my body. Literally, I've had them 5 days and they are totally attached. I am Mommy! When I walk around the living room, they follow me everywhere, so funny and endearing.

Awwww. That is sooooo sweet! I wish I had the energy to have ducks. I really wanted Sebastopols too but..... not this year.

OK, How bad is this. I ran both a store and a customer service department for YEARS ( OK tens of years, but who's counting) and I have a guy I cannot cut off emailing 4-5 times a day WHO HAS NOT EVEN BOUGHT CHICKS FROM ME!
his new thing is he wants me to reset up his chick pen.. who in the world does he think I am? The poor guy is a personal assistant who got left with his bosses chicks, ( and tortoises IIRC) and he is clueless. I have been trying to give him basic advice because who wants babies to die, but come on! 5 emails a DAY???

This is after he said he was coming over twice, and went and got chicks somewhere else. Hopefully the last nice email will work...

Give me the nice asian guy who wants to buy all my silkie babies and thanked me for the advice on cocci any day....

So I got some Sav-A-Chick and made it up for the babies. I have a couple questions...

Do I really need to make a new batch of it every day like the package says to? I poured 1 pack into a gallon of water THEN read on the back of the package that you should replace it every day. That seems a bit wasteful to me... They certainly aren't using 1 pack worth every day. Maybe 1/4 of one at most.
Also, do I need to give them a seperate thing of water WITHOUT the stuff in it, too?

Put the water in the fridge to keep it fresh ( or thats what I do) You should change their water every day, it gets in the brooder and stinky. ( if im wrong and something in the vits does not last after 24 hrs, someoene speak up!)

That should be the only water source.

If I open my clear eggs (my shipped eggs that are on day 12) will I be able to tell if they were ever fertile in the first place?

I can tell some of the time on my eggs. As long as the eggs didn't dry out ( sometimes pourous shells or hard handling do that) and the yolks are not thick. Those I cant tell if there was bullseyes on ( but usualy that is more then 12 days)

A bator really shouldn't smell that bad. Clean it out really...really good before hatching again. I would add a tiny bit of bleach to the water in the humidity tray. Not so much that it smells strongly of bleach..just a few drops. Maybe add a tiny amount again when adding water during lock down too. It sounds like you has some issues with bacteria and that can cause sticky chicks, rough navels, unabsorbed yolks, and death of chicks. My foam bator rarely smells...other than a faint smell of eggs or a wet egg/chick smell during hatching. You shouldn't have condensation during incubation or hatching either. Make sure your vents are wide open..the extra humidity is hard on the electronics, causes ideal conditions for bacterial growth and most likely lower your hatch rate too.

Thanks for the advice. My bator stunk after the first day of hatchings too.

Well it was a little discouraging to see that. It is just a bummer because I had the largest losses on the shipped eggs. I think 9 didn't hatch of the ones that went in to lockdown. I had to dispense with the last shipped egg to hatch last night too and it was not my idea of a good time. It just wasn't getting better it was actually getting worse. SO, I believe I have two viable Wheaten Ameracauna's to hatch out of 15 total shipped eggs. Let's hope one is a girl.

My numbers were 45 eggs, 6 clears, three early quitters. 9 no hatchers.... 27 hatched, one culled

. Total 26 babies that I have no idea what to do with.....lol.

26 is awesome!! Until you start wondering where they're going to go! haha I guess a couple of people on BYC will be doing some coop expansions soon!

How are you keeping them from pooping on your floor???

Same question! Johnny won't let me have any chickens in the house because they poop everywhere.

Someone in Danville is selling a 2 yr old breeding pair of toulouse geese on craigslist. They are asking $30 for the pair. I guess that they are too noisy!

Just wanted to share a few pics of my top hen Precious and her 3 babies that hatched from Langshan/Langshan mix eggs from the farm. She is such a good mommy! She had them out in the yard when they were only 2 days old. One of the chicks has pasty butt so I've been cleaning her vent. It makes Precious nervous to hear the chick screaming but she calms down as soon as I've finished. I guess I just assumed that broody raised chicks wouldn't have that problem. I do know that she is getting them to eat all kinds of things like mulberries.





This little chick is very outgoing and was one of the first of the three to come out from under mama.


He/she was going after Precious's eye while I was taking pics. You can see him pulling on her eyelid in this pic.

We have little quart sized waterers that we got at the feed store so I only use 1/4 of each packet every day. Yes, you need to change it every day. It won't kill them if you miss a day of changing it though. You only need to give it to them for a week or so. It's a pain in the butt! I'm doing it over here too.
