So I candled all my eggs last night. Got rid of 12 from my shipped eggs (11 clear, 1 blood ring), so I have 3 left that are BLRW due 5/9. Of those three 2 have weird air cells, but at least they are mostly where they should be. The third has an air cell that goes half way down one side of the egg, how much of a chance does this one have? All 6 of my grocery store eggs have development. (due 5/16). I went to check on and candle the other 6 grocery store eggs that are with my broody Silkie. One of them had a hole in it and was rotten

, then while I was moving her over so i could check her eggs she got upset and pooped (nasty runny poop) all over her nest and eggs. I've been worried about her anyway, because she has been broody for well over two months now. I have tried to break her (with no luck), so I gave her some eggs to hatch, planning to put them into the incubator when I had more space. Now I'm worried about putting those eggs in with the rest of them. I cleaned out her nesting box, and wiped the eggs off the best I could, but with the bad eggs, and the poop I'm worried that they will get bacteria in them. AHHHHH....

They'll be fine, broodies move around with their babies even in the middle of winter. As long as they are protected over exposure, getting wet and can get back into the warmth. You didn't harm your chick in any way.

Okay, thanks! I leave my chick picture area out there and always go out and get my cameras exposure right before photographing each chick. That way, I only have to grab a chick, place it on the cutting board, snap a few pictures, and can immediately bring them back inside and put them in the brooder.
The little Polish just really hates me I can't wait until I can start giving them treats, maybe then it'll like me more.

Figure that out, patent your idea and make a fortune!

No really, it's mostly finding a feeder they can't get into to scratch out the food and it should have a lip on the side so they can't flip out the food with their beak. I find the most successful type is the feeder with a hole for them to just put their head in.

They'll always spill some food, some of which will get eaten from the floor and some of which will be wasted. I find some of my birds are messier than others.

I have personally learned a LOT from having a broody raise some chicks. I learned they are hardier than I gave them credit for. It was pretty cold when my hen was walking her chicks around. Even at a week old she brought them outside in the cold wind for foraging. Now they could hide under mama to stay warm - so I wouldn't push it more than a few seconds. But I saw my chicks out in the weather and they are all almost 3 months old now- so the weather isn't as nice as it is even now.

Oh yeah! haha I have found that having the food as high as possible- that they can still access it but just so really helps! We put it up on bricks or plates (for hatchlings).

For the chicks I make a feeder out of a shoe box and cut holes/slits in the bottom 1/4 of the box so they can just stick their heads in to get food. Otherwise they get in their food to sleep and poop in it or like you said, get it all over the place lol

Good Morning!

I have a random question that isn't urgent at all, just more of a curiosity.

My Polish chickens have been the most "interesting" to watch from this hatch. They weren't shipped eggs, the very first egg to pip was a Polish and it was 2 days early and it never did hatch.

Of the remaining three that did hatch, one is very robust and most likely a Rooster based on it's actions.

The second one is a black one and I was waiting and waiting for it to fluff up after hatching and have notice that you can't fluff what you don't have. This one was born with bald patches. No fluff what so ever in about 3-4 spots. It also has a large looking cyst over it's one shoulder that I have come to think is maybe part of the crop. No fluff there either so I can see it clearly.

Does anyone ever get patchy chickens like that?

The third Polish was one I had to help and was pretty weak for 24 hours. It is smaller too, and last night it had a pasty butt. I saw it squatting like a dog and noticed it was having issues. I cleaned it and put it back and it left a GIANT poop a minute later. Poor thing was all backed up. Nothing like having your butt stuck shut!

I just find it interesting that these guys are all Polish and are all a little odd. Except of course He Man that is super pushy, big, healthy and aggressive.
