What type of incubator did you use? did you use shipped eggs? Local eggs hatch better, its best to learn how to hatch on them, MUCH less discouraging. We have some amazing hatching experts on this thread, we can help!

I think I have a hovabator I'm not positive but im pretty sure it is. They were from a friend of mine. Some of the eggs had mostly developed chicks in them but they just didnt make it out.

oh. my. gosh. lol Can you stack while using a turner? hehe!! I might need to...
If I stacked them, I would take out the turner and tilt the incubator with a big book and then move to the other side several times a day.

I would really need a straight jacket if I did that though....

Hello everyone!

I am in Gilroy. Im 30 minutes east of the coast and a half hour south of San Jose and an hour and a half south of San Francisco.

I'm new to chickens (less than a month) although I've had macaws for 20 years.

I like to talk to someone about our weather and what chickens can handle. I purchased the small coop at Costco and it doesn't have a door to close up the roost area at night. Our winters are so mild but we do have times where it drops into the 20's/30's.
I want to start planning now for modifications I might have to make. This is a photo of the coop after I just put it together. While it was a great idea at the time, I sure wish I just bought a shed and modified it. But I do live in town and this is just for them to sleep in as I let them roam the yard all day...

Welcome to the thread and to chickens! Hope you have as much fun with them as we all do!

Welcome to all you new chicken fans out there!

I have a basque egg peeping back to me, hoping for a pip or two tonight.

Awesome!!

I just figured out my hatches--Dick Horstman shipped the replacement eggs from last year--They showed up without notice yesterday. I did talk to Dick two months ago.....then they just show up!

I have 130 egg incubating right now in three incubators and under a broody. I have space for 4 more eggs and then I would need to start stacking them.....The eggs will hatch at 4 different times so 4 staggered hatches going on at the same time.

How did this happen?    :gig

Omg Ron! You are crazy!

You are all so friendly! It's nice to know there are nice people like you around.

Welcome!! There are tons of awesome people on this thread. You found the right place! :)

My two call duck eggs have pipped (along with a zillion turkeys) :weee

Congrats Deb!

I want to hatch eggs so bad but I'm not good with an incubator. I've done 1 incubation of 42 eggs with no eggs hatched

Im to scared to try again.
If it is a still air, you can add a fan. There is also a good guide for hatching in a still air--ChooksChicks incubation cheat sheet

We can get you hatching in no time! Miss Molly lives in Newcastle and she sells layer flock eggs for a low price! They would be great to practice with.

Start with a dozen though.

of course I did.....It was at 5 days but I did see development in a bunch of them. I will do a thorough candling on Sunday. By they way, how did you get a Jumbo Dorking egg? That thing is huge! It looks like it has a single yolk and it is developing. I have read that Jumbo eggs do not hatch as well so I am intrigued by it.
I wasn't scolding, just asking. I thought you didn't candle until 7 days and I was being impatient again.
I was wondering if you were going to say something about that giant egg! I couldn't close the carton completely with that thing in there. If you noticed, the other eggs from that same hen were not as big. I thought it was a double yolk but wanted to see what would happen if it was incubated. An experiment!

What ever you want to do with the Del eggs is fine. Horstman's eggs are more precious!

I was hiding because I was breaking my own hatching rules....I just could not resist though.

Horstman's eggs are special and I really hope the Silver Penciled Rocks hatch! I was not expecting those. The Del eggs are staying too though.

On Sunday I will look very carefully at the Jumbo egg--I will be looking for two embryos. That egg is big enough that I might even get two to hatch out of one that big.

Can someone please help me identify my new chicks ? i picked them up at the feed store to keep my singleton Silkie chick company. I was hoping to pick out Cochins and chose the black ones and then my DH wanted the red/brown one...

I think the top one is something along the lines of a Partridge? Cochin? bantam.. My Partridge Wyandotte Bantam has very similar markings - just no feathery legs. The Black ones look like Black Cochin Bantam or Black Brahma Bantams. You have some feathery feet there!
Does anybody on this thread live in or near Sacramento?

Hello and another Welcome to Northern California Thread!

I agree with the other people, the only worry you will have is with the heat - not the cold. There are a few birds which will not tolerate it. Your coop does not need to be closed up at night except to keep out predators. Air is good!

I have had no luck with the Hovabator, but I was trying in a house that just wouldn't hold a steady temperature. It can be done successfully if you have the right environment to put the incubator in. After you absorb all the incubator information on here - try it again. There is nothing better than successfully hatching chicks...

Chiqita, Black Australorps are good to go in the heat! I bet Black Langshans are too.

It is weird how well the Australorps do in the heat, but then again it is pretty dang hot in Australia....
