California - Northern

I do not go over there but has to be kinder than the Heritage , Ameraucana or Marans thread lol

The worst thread with Heritage in the title was closed in December. That one was very much not like this one. Yes, threads with Blue and or Dark egg shells are very frustrating.

Yes, Lots of threads like that! Got beat up on one just this morning....Weird how people get.

I to not have CCLs anymore--they do not do well in the heat here-but When I did I quit going to that thread too.
Bummer on the CCL's and the heat. Roseville is exceptionally hot for about 3 months of the year. I do have a lovely shade tree and I am going to use perimeter misters which can lower the adjacent temp by 8 degrees or so..... I actually used a fan or two and the misters in Fairfield on the really hot days, and Ice blocks in water. They seemed to do okay then.

It always cracks me up. Some people think they are Experts. They may be BUT if you try something and it works then well now what?

Hehe thanks everyone

Sorry the picture posted so big - I posted it from my phone, didn't realize until now, looking at the thread from my computer, that it would post so huge!
I am kind of thinking that would be a great background picture on my phone! lol

What great ideas you have!  Your students will be lucky to have you helping them learn all this exciting stuff for science.  I started hatching so the kids could enjoy seeing the baby chick grow and to just have a few friendly chickens around for pets and eggs.  It has been so much fun, I would do it all the time if I had space to keep the babies.  They love it, I love it...Are you near Sacto?  I do not know if anyone else on this thread has gone to Auburn's 4H ebryology program, but it is top rate!  There is a lady there named June Stewart and she has been helping schools hatch chicks for over 20 years.  They have incubators, turners, books, 4H informational instruction books for various ages and crafts to loan to people.  It's such a wonderful resource!  If any teacher is within driving distance of Auburn 4H, I highly recommend checking it out.

Thanks, but I am WAY north. Almost to Oregon. I've heard good things about our local 4H program though. Probably will get my own daughters involved in it.

It's a bunch hotter in Roseville than Fairfield. They will be fine with misters and fans. mahonri in AZ has an air conditioned coop for his!

I am working on breeds that just need shade. So far the Blue Egg Layers from the UofArkansas have handled the heat very well. The Penedesencas and Basque only pant and do not put out their wings. When it gets over 100 I will have to put out the misters but I hope to have all heat hardy breeds by next summer.

not sure why but you are correct. The new ameraucana thread is more pleasant as well.
as for dark egg threads I only go to the penedesenca one generally as even on the dark layer threads most people do not know much about them and it is Marans or nothing lol.

Yes, we all have things to learn! Why go on a rant about silly little things. The truth is most often the main point of contention is a mis understanding any way....Quite silly.

I KNOW! Fairfield would often get about a week maximum of hot and then we would get the cool from the fog that comes inland. The nice cool evening breeze would blow in. In Roseville, it is hot and sticky with not a breath of air. Although I like Roseville better. Fairfield was starting to get too many gangs and other such undesirables.

I wish I was rich enough to run an AC for the chickens, but I barely run it for me!

I have one Basque that hatched out of two. One was not fertile. I am waiting to see if it is a he or a she. And I have one OE Penedesenca something mix.
