Yes, we all have things to learn! Why go on a rant about silly little things. The truth is most often the main point of contention is a mis understanding any way....Quite silly.

I was trying to understand all the intense barring info between light and dark- and all the crosses used and where good references in proper breeding were. CAN OF WORMS! Ill just post pictures here and learn with you lovely people.

Yesterday I let the babies go out in two groups to a pen in the front yard. They loved it!

The Black Penedesencas are too small to stay in the pen at 4 weeks old.

In a regular swimming pool, maybe...But a beach entry is a gentle slope that leads into the pool, so the chicks could walk in and out of it, if they want to, don't you think?

The key words being "if they want to"!!

Our friend with horses and ducks ,down the road , loose several chickens a year to pools and water troughs...

Well I candled and had to toss some really expensive eggs painful! Lol. Have another batch right behind them so I will see soon how well those are. It's hard to see only 2 of my most anticipated breed in the incubator. Guess I can hope for a roo and a hen and pray they both hatch

I forgot to say how much I love that pic of your BC drooling! Either she does that often or you have great timing.

I saw that story & photos about the chickens in the pool and couldn't believe it. We have a stock tank in front of our house and I decided to put one of my hens in there to see if she could swim. Sure enough, she swam around and seemed to enjoy it. Chickens can swim!... A few days later, the level of the water had dropped so that the tank was half full. I walked by and noticed that hen was back in there, swimming again. Unfortunately, this time she could not get out. She was soaked, cold and exhausted, poor thing. I wrapped her up in a towel and blow dried her, kept her in a warm room because she was chilled. She survived but has never gone swimming again.
I've actually lost more chicks to drowning in our many water bowls/troughs around here, than losses from predators. Drowning is a big risk for young chickens.

I have one of those cedar framed greenhouses. I've tried passive methods of heat but it still gets cold enough in the worst part of winter to kill tomato plants inside. I did keep one tomato plant alive for 2 years but a freeze below 20 one night killed it. Yet, we've kept a lime tree alive on our covered deck. Outside in the ground, the only citrus survivors have been the Meyer lemon and Ruby grapefruit.

Ron, I have wrapped chicken wire and cardboard around the bottom edge of those cages to keep young chicks inside.

So my lone gosling hatched. It's a yay and darn it all at once. She is totally alone. NO buddy. My ducklings are WAY too old and big for her right now. The chicks are like a month old just about and too pecky. I don't know what to do. I contacted a local goose breeder to see if she has anything and a friend who had a broody hatch some...otherwise we are carrying that new gosling around. I have no many things to do though. ahhh! She is so adorable though!
