Here are a few of my chick pics. these are and "Ameraucana" from Privett and my little dorking polish X check out her toes in the close up but these chicks are only 3 days apart the dorkingx is the same size as all my other hatchlings.

The EE is just about as pretty a chick as I have seen. Looks like a bon bon! does the leg color indicate anything about egg color??

It doesn't have a fifth distinct toe on either foot but instead the back toe on both is divided in two, clearly on the right not so much on the left

No crest. Mom is a buff laced polish don't they hatch with crests??

That is a fifth toe on the right foot.

I saw your post on the North-Central Cal thread - and was going to tell you that one is slow - this one moves much quicker... sometimes too quick. I spend lots of time catching up - almost answering something and then finding out its been answered already about 5 times...

Crazy broodies and hens!!!

Why oh why do hens like to pile on top of each other when there are empty nest boxes?

There are 4 hens in this nest box...two are broody. My son has started to where socks on his hands to collect the eggs

Now I have 4 broodies including 3 hens that want to sit on eggs and one with chicks.

Three days does make a lot of difference in size on chicks. They will catch up in a couple of weeks when the growth spurt slows down. You don't realize how big they are until you put younger ones with them.. only then can you see how fast they really are growing!

Leg color does not indicate egg color. Ear color is closer.. usually white earlobes means white eggs - but not always. Pea comb is linked closely to the blue egg gene - but I have a pea combed white eared EE hen that lays white eggs

Your EE is pretty - I think I see the possibility of some blue feathers in there with that grey chick down..

The 5th toe usually comes off the 4th toe - only with careful breeding do they become almost distinct. Most are joined like that.

I know nothing about when polish get their crests. My only crested non-Silkie birds had vaulted skulls too - looked like they had a crest before it actually grew in. I have seen some pictures of SFH that grew their crests later on - I didn't see anything in their baby pictures that said they were crested or not.

I am probably not an impartial observer.. but the cutest chicks I have ever seen are Partridge Silkie chicks.. extra floof, dark eyes/beak/legs, feathered feet (like furry leggings/shoes), AND the chipmunk stripes..

So my eggs that are due to hatch Thursday are all marked BLRW. The eggs were all different kinds of Wyandotte (some mixed color, and some pure bred from his breeding pens). The 3 eggs left all look on the small side to me. I know the breeder has both bantam and standard Blue Laced Reds, but he didn't mark which they were on the eggs. Does any one have any idea from the pics? I know my SLW lays eggs much bigger than these. If they are bantam, would they hatch a little sooner than a standard egg?

Yes, I am assuming in pools that don't have beach entries. Sorry, I just have a really hard time believing that a chicken would drown in a pool that has such an incredibly easy exit.

Not a "swimming pool" these were kiddie pools. Like a little over a foot tall. They were for the ducks to play in I guess? I know it seems weird! But I expect losses for a variety of reasons- weather, predator , hazards... So really it's just a calculated risk like any other part of keeping animals. They may never have a problem!

Mine hatched at the same time but you'll be able to tell in a few days which ones are obviously banties.

A lot of features do not work correctly on Smart Phones and Google Chrome. Multi Quotes works with the newest versions of Internet Explorer and Fire Fox. On Macs, it should work on Safari and the newest Fire Fox but not Chrome.

I am thankful then that I am not having issues using Google Chrome. I was initially but it is working well now. Maybe I worked out all the "user error" issues as well.

We processed our first quail today.............................way easier than chickens. I hope I like them, they are destined for Cinco de Mayo dinner.

Are you really close to them or do they just that big? My quail were small. I am still interested, but I just can't do the processing darn it! And there is no one else to do it for me!

Please update with the taste test later I know updating us here is on your priority list.

Hahah! Yes, but I think maybe people underestimate them. I've seen some chicks do some pretty cool tricks...I'm fact, once my chicks are older, I'm planning on clicker training them. I'll teach them some fun stuff and take videos for you guys
