California - Northern

Oh my gosh! Everyone's chicks (and ducklings, and goslings) are so cute but d'Anvers are my weakness! I seriously need to find someone in California with a couple of extras!
Awwww

So many cute chicks! Guess I better add some of my own cuteness . . . These are Belgian d'Anver chicks that hatched on Friday. From left to right~ Dun Cuckoo, Dun Cuckoo, Dun Quail, Dun Quail, buff Columbian. I also hatched 8 W/BW Ameraucana chicks from my own birds but haven't taken pictures of them yet.

Wish more had hatched

Out of the twelve eggs, 3 were clears (all 3 were the porcelains which I wanted most) and of the 4 that didn't hatch 3 were the buff Columbians and one Dun Quail. I think you can color sex the Dun Cuckoos. If so, both are roosters with that yellow spot on their heads.

Sorry you didn't get any porcelains this time...but congrats on the lovely little ones that did hatch! There's always next time.

Beautiful babies Chickee. I've never heard or seen anything put the porcelains and quail varieties, our little one is such a clown.

Yesterday I let the babies go out in two groups to a pen in the front yard. They loved it!

The Black Penedesencas are too small to stay in the pen at 4 weeks old.

Jason's Rooster:

Black Penedesenca Pullet:

Australorps:

Fogel RIRs:

The RIRs were very active! I have a video compiling on Vimeo and will post it soon.
I've been gone all day and ten pages behind. That is a bunch of good looking chicks! The color of the RIR's is gorgeous.

He will look good with mine that is for sure
Hmmmm, my post seems to be invisible.

We processed our first quail today.............................way easier than chickens. I hope I like them, they are destined for Cinco de Mayo dinner.

yummy
Jason, the greenhouse is a kit I scored at the Grocery Outlet, of all places. $35.95 for a small walk-in metal frame & PVC connectors with green, breathable plastic covering. A friend of mine had just bought a smaller version at Ace Hardware in Plymouth for $69.95, so she was a bit tweaked. (There was only the one at PGO.)

It's actually taller than I am, so snapping the connectors at the very top was not easy. I built it from the ground level up, instead of laying it all down, lengthwise, to snap it together. Luckily, John came by with some Heirloom tomato starts he'd picked up for me at the Veteran's Memorial Plant Sale on Saturday, so he man-powered all the higher tubes into their respective connectors. Now the wire shelves also actually fit the way they should.

I have so many plants I need to get into the ground OR into pots.... And then the tender ones most likely to be poultry-plucked set up onto the shelves in the greenhouse.

My contractor (John) accuses me of torturing plants. If I don't get the tomatoes planted today, he has threatened to repossess them.
can not go wrong for that money
I am in Modesto, and everyone here considers us to be in Nor Cal. I am originally from So Cal, so when I drive home to visit, I tend to see the line at the Grapevine, too. Always breathe a little easier when we are heading north toward home. ;)
welcome to the thread
Okay, I just took all the baby waterfowl for a bath and a graze on the lawn. I need to sort through the 100+ photos I took, but in the meantime, here is some ducky cuteness for you.

One of the call ducks I just hatched out

cute again

Oh snap. My flock has the broody virus. Broody #2 is my 8/9 month old Sizzle pullet. She's even cleaned her breast off. She is sitting on her own egg. Been on her nest for 2 days. She is a small sprite. I don't want her hatching her own egg- I have some speckled Sussex eggs in the bator I am happily to slip under her. How many LF eggs can a bantam sit on? 2,3, 4?

My Silkie was able to cover 6 big eggs, and they all were developing fine.

Created most of them himself! You should go to his website and look at all the photos of his birds.
