I do put a food dish under her beak however, so if she ants to show them food she does not have to move. I hand feed em a little once there is a peeping chick. They will eat then if they ave been fasting so I have fun watching them gorge and coo. I wonder if that makes them stay? Never thought about it before....

Hi guys! Haven't been on in a few days. Does anyone else miss a couple of days and dread coming back on to BYC to catch up on all the posts? Well I do! Haha I can't catch up on all of the pages so I just wanted to say hi and see how everyone is doing!

Yesterday while playing with the basques and pita pintas I picked up a pp chick and she started screaming. She was so afraid! I think what's been happening is when I open up the brooder, all of the comfortable friendly guys come out and they get all of the attention. Although I make a point if grabbing and holding the ones that are too afraid to leave their brooder, I obviously haven't been doing a good enough job. Poor thing acted like she'd never been held.. And they're two weeks already.

thank you! she is a silver penciled plymouth rock, one of two i got from Cheryl last summer -- and the nest box she's sitting in has a much higher lip than the one Speedy was in, making it much harder for day-old chicks to get OUT -- i'm actually going to have to figure something out to make it easier for them to get out tomorrow, but i figure they are okay all staying in the box together today, to give those abandoned eggs a chance to hatch if they're going to. i don't want to disturb her too much right now, so resisting the temptation to peek under to see how they're doing.

either way, both of these broodies has four happy chicks -- if any more of the remaining five hatch, it will be considered a happy bonus. and Daisy, my broody #4, should be hatching her eggs (the ones from Miss Molly and Deann) sometime this coming weekend!

Other birds to consider are the Jays and the Crows. When I had mine out last spring the Jays gathered in the tree next to the little pool I was using for a brooder. They were squaking and staring and josling for position. It was like a scene from The Birds. I kept the top covered so all was fine but it was freaky.

I had a jay attack one of my 7 week old Silkies last year. It had it by the neck, I heard them squaking, and ran out. They jay flew away, and the baby was freaked out but ok. It was scary!!

We lost our first chicken today I think we've been pretty lucky so far, we have had chickens for over a year and a half. My little RIR got out of the coop and my big dog got it. So sad!! I don't know how she got out of the coop! I've inspected it and can't figure it out.
