27 chicks went into lockdown and between yesterday and this morning, 24 healthy chicks have hatched!!! e It is looking like there are quite a few boys, but I haven't attempted to count the boys vs girls yet.  I'm just basking in their cuteness for now .  I cannot tell the difference between the Blue Barnevelder and the regular Black, but the 3 splashes are noticeable and gorgeous.  Love them all.  So cute.  Is anyone going to need a Barnevelder Rooster over the next few months?  I'd love to keep them all, but I might need to rehome a couple roosters eventually...when they start crowing...

The other 3 basically had positioning issues...maybe related to how I incubated.  I'm not sure.  All I know is these eggs were really great.  100% fertility and very healthy chicks .

Congrats I am glad you got a good hatch! Just wait a few days and start checking wing tips for blue showing. The standard barnies will have black and red/gold on their wing tips just as they start getting their first primary feathers. The blues will show blue and red/gold. Some may fool you if they are really dark blue. I would recommend keeping "blacks" too...keep quality over color if you plan on breeding them. I have had some really nice black hens and roosters from my blue line so don't toss good genetics just because they Are black instead of blue.

Here is my black pullet from a blue mating. I have to look really close to tell the difference between her and my pure barnevelder hens. Her lacing is pretty darn crisp. It gets a little spotty across her back, but otherwise is perfect.


And here's the blue boy I'll be keeping - he fits closest to the barnevelder SOP. The other cockerel has some great features as well, but I'll only be keeping 1 blue boy long term. The other cockerel I keep will be pure barnevelder - currently growing them out.

You can sometimes tell sex by breast down color at hatch. Boys have white chests girls have grey/ tan chests. But, this is not 100% All the time. You can get chicks that have narrow strips of white that are hard to sex by color. My pures are easier to sex, but my blues are still not as accurate in chest color. Breast down color is kind of like sexing by V markings and eyeliner in welsummers or head spots in barred/ cuckoo breeds. Some of us think that by selecting chicks that are clearly marked for breeders will help improve accuracy.

That is good to know that is is difficult to autosex blues. Maybe some are being sneaky then. I'm definitely no expert, but I tried to see if I could tell the sexes of these little ones. I didn't presume to even try to sex the 3 splashes (so pretty!), but there are definitely 3 girls in there that do not have a distinct white blaze down the front. Does the comb on top have anything to do with it?

We had so much fun watching them all hatch! They are really healthy babies and all but one little lagging chick is running around eating and drinking very well. He was one of the last to hatch, so I'm sure he'll get there too. Thank you so much for all the wonderful chicks

Beautiful girl! I have no Barnies in either of my flocks and they are so beautiful! Hmmm...I may need to find some chicks/eggs sometime in the future!

My blues are from Trisha. As are my pure barnevelders.

. The pure Barnevelder rooster that Trisha has is huge. He must be over 14 pounds if he's an ounce. He is simply gorgeous. Well, so are her blue roosters too for that matter...I just liked them all. I'm sure Happy Chooks are nice too

. We are so fortunate in Ca. to have so many varieties of chickens available within our state.
