California - Northern

I don't know anything about the breed but sure like the body on that hen.

If you wanted to know a little history and see more Barnevelder hens/roosters, there are more pictures here:

Chris - congrats on the broody and chicks!

Nikon - funny pics!

Thank you. She's got great type, wing carriage, tail angle, nice head, and her eggs are nice and dark, so she's staying put as a breeder. Her feathers are pretty tight, but not as tight as my pure barnevelder hens. She's close enough though that I have to look at leg bands to tell her apart from my pure barnie hens - my pure barnies have leg bands and she doesn't.
She is very nice. Good markings. I hope my chicks turn out as nice as their parents, siblings and cousins!

a different kind of chicklet drama here today: just "helped" Daisy (broody #4)'s 6th chick, one of the isbars from Miss Molly, kick off the last bits of its shell -- hurrah! waiting to see if the last few eggs hatch...

School eggs update: We somehow managed to not over-cook the eggs! Thermometer/temperature drama has settled down. Thank goodness! I actually had a nightmare about it one night. All 21 eggs that were set started developing. Only one has a blood ring, which I will toss tomorrow after candeling with the kids so they can see what a blood ring looks like. All the others look great! Originally set 17 on Friday, and then someone brought us more on Monday, thinking our class needed some. Hopefully this means that at least one chick will hatch during the school day so that the kids can see it.

Edited to clarify: It was two Fridays ago that we set the eggs, not this past Friday.
