Now with this "purple bloom" ... Is it the specific breed you all like or simply achieving the pink purple ish hue?
My children's "project" a few years back pumped out several babies that gave mauve to dark purple eggs. Is that a preference for a substantial group of people???

Yes it's the egg color for me do you have hens that lay the mauve color still?

Hi guys!!! It's been crazy here. My grampa passed away yesterday; 1 month to the day of his wife's funeral I've been a bit preoccupied... I've missed you all!!!
My dilemma: My boys are now talking about how they are boys!!! AAAHHH Anybody need any roos that were hatched in February? I'm trying to hang on to a Silkie roo, but I have 2 that haven't started crowing, but their brother has... I have 3 EE/Brahmas. Anybody?

I think they get their chicks from Belt and Ideal hatchery. The one those 3 came from was a mixed lot of bantam chicks. I'll look up which breeds they carry. Is a Buttercup a bantam? Thanks guys!

They come in bantam and large fowl.

I am hatching by Hen--Each basket had eggs form one hen and then the chicks each get a different color band based on the Hen that was the mother.

I am hatching like this for Capayvalleychick. Kim is learning a lot already.

So, I though this little one was a Silkie, but now I'm questioning it. What else could it be?

The feathers don't look like a Silkie, to me



and it only has 4 toes, don't Silkies have 5?



I have no idea what this one is, does anyone else have a guess?

That last one is soooooooo adorable! I love its markings on its face!

I started today with the other mixed chick hatched and a partr rock that didn't make it As the day went on the little orps hatched and I was put on suicide watch with them. They wanted to squeeze through the metal grate of the crate. Not a smart move with 20+ big girls watching. I found some 1/4 inch plastic mesh that I zip tied to the door. The remaining rock egg got moved to the other OEGB who is brooding, if it hatches I'll move it back in the morning. It had pipped but since the first chick has been out for 2 days and it could use food and water.

:-( That's a rough thing to wake up to. Glad you have some hatching though!

I have 4 of the eggs that are still in the incubator but Monet assures me that they are no good. We candle eggs together and she is much more cut throat at getting rid of them. I always hope that maybe they are just a little behind in development rather than early quitters. She is always right, though. I just couldn't bring myself to throw all 30 away. The eggs from my birds at the farm are developing nicely so I know it is not my incubator.

A few questions:

1) Do chickens normally eat their own or their coop-mate's feathers? Mine have been.

2) When do roos start to crow? Mine are around 8 1/2 weeks old.

3) Do some chickens like a little light in the coop to see at night? The flocks first few nights in the coop were on the chilly side so at dusk we turned on the light to lure them in and left it on. Now they don't really go in until we turn it on (it's not a heat lamp anymore but like a 60 watt light bulb) and then turn it off after they climb onto their roosts.

They are a Spanish breed that are super friendly and hardy. And super rare (if you are into that! ) They lay A LOT of whitish/light brown eggs. They are related to Basques and are even friendlier than them. I'll PM you the price. Here's a pic of the girls and boys and also the chicks.
