Hi everybody! This thread is my daily required reading and I love all the chick pics.

I need some advice. I have an Ameraucana that went seriously broody over a month ago, and she is getting thin. I pick her up and put her outside a few times a day, so I know she eats, but I'm getting a bit worried. Will she ever give up? How long do you let them stay broody and what are the options for discouraging her? I don't have room to let her hatch out eggs and we are going on a real vacation in 4 weeks, so the timing would not work either. Any ideas?

You have long term chickens.

But... Has anyone read the 64 dollar tomato?
We are those people!! Lol
I think buckeyes are grand but have had bad luck with shipped eggs.

More quail died last night. I am giving them corid and put heat on both sides of the pen but I don't think either one of those things are it. Quail from week before are fine. Same feed ( glad I didn't give them fermented feed or I would think botulism)

Holy crap!! While typing everything that was the same I figured what was different.... My sand!

I got new sand plays and and it was dusty. They were on paper towels over it but it was dusty in that room.

Switched everyone into different containers put the HEPA filter on in there and opened the windows to switch the air. I hope that is it! One of the bad thins about solid walls and chicks.

If it was it I bet I loose a few more today but hopefully that is it.
I am interested to hear on this too. Do you think the dust could be causing respiratory problems? Or do you think that maybe there was something else in the sand? Maybe put papertowels back over it for a day or so and see if that helps?

Get a couple of hatchery chicks from a feed store(or Cream Legbars from Dean) and put them under her. She will quickly start taking care of them and if you want, you can take the chicks away from them after a day or two.

They will sometimes keep trying to hatch golf balls for months....Silly chickens.....

Yeah, I finally received my birds from Sand Hill Preservation. I placed my order December 2011 and got them today. 17 months later but who is counting? I ordered 25 birds, they shipped 29 and 27 survived. I really wanted the Brabaters and that is what they ended up being short on. Urg.. Fortunately, everyone looks healthy and are eating and drinking to the hearts content.

Here is the total count.
Mille Fleur Leghorn 11, Flame Jaerhon 8, Norwegian Jaerhon 5, Cream Brabanters 3

Funny thing. I ordered the MFL before I had my current flock which I got from Cheryl. Now, I am not sure what to do with these. I think I may toe punch them and grow them out so I can compare them to the birds I already have. This should be interesting.

construction sand has more silica. There could be more silica in the sand than normal.

I use paper towels for a couple of days and then switch them to coarse pine shavings. I put sand in the Layer run and grow out pens.

I have discovered that litter life(southland organics) is great for spraying on the poop tray under the chicken hutch in the garage. It really keeps the smell down.

That's what I did with my head hen 2 years ago. She just wouldn't give up sitting on a wooden egg. Even when I removed the wooden egg, she still kept sitting on nothing. She had been sitting for over 4 weeks so instead of getting fertile eggs for her, I went to the feedstore and purchased 3 day old Speckled Sussex chicks. We slipped them under her at night and she accepted them with only a small peck. She was so happy and a great mama bird. She did go broody 2 more times that year but we were able to break her those times. This year, when she went broody, we put fertile eggs under her instead. She is happily raising 3 Langshan mix chicks!

No kidding, but I think I am more stubborn than patient. They offered to refund my $$ last year when they could not fulfill my order, but I asked them to hold it and ship this year. I have been wanting Brabanters for far too long to cancel my order.

Last week I hatched Brabanters eggs from Molly so now I should have a nice little group.
