I didn't feel/notice an earthquake; must be too far away. None of my hatchery girls have gone broody, my Buff Orp sometimes sits on the nest and gets puffy/irritable but it doesn't stick. Too bad I bet she could sit on a bunch of eggs since she is so big and fluffy.

My very first broody was one of my original hatchery (feed store) girls, a BO which laid for a month then went broody. Luckily, one of my feed store "pullets" was an accidental roo. Buffy hatched a single chick from an egg laid by Rebecca, who is gone, but my first GrandChick Samantha is still with me. So is Buffy, who is currently broody for her fourth time.

The real surprise is Rhoda, also one of those original feed store girls - she went broody last year at age three. And she's a RIR.

Right now I have ELEVEN broody hens. Out of fifty, that's not so horrible. But c'mon - 11 broody poops a day! Gah!

Rare or less likely does not mean that Hatchery Hens will not go Broody. If you want Broody hens, you will have more of them with non Hatchery Hens from a Breeder.

I am still waiting for my McMurray Partridge Rocks to go Broody. They are over a year old and some of them go Broody at Two years old.....

I bought a mixed bag from McMurray to find broodies. The Silkie and the Silver Phoenix went broody right off the bat and were great moms. I have just had my Mottled Houdan go broody. What really shocked me is I had a 7 year old feed store EE go broody! Never ever had an EE go broody before - and this girl has a clean face, white earlobes and lays white eggs (so pretty close to leghorn)... but she was going to hatch her some eggs! I threw her in another coop to break her - she is a spaz bird and I don't need any more chicks right now... that cabinet incubator has been busy!

I have had 3 broodies from Silkies/Silkie cross I got from another BYC member. One hatched one chick and then too exception to the chicks I tried to give her, so I took them all away - she is in another coop. Another Silkie cross tried to go broody on me but she was low man on the totem pole and her mother was already in the one nest - so she got put in with another coop and stopped being broody. The other hatched out 4 chicks and is doing great.

I wonder if you have one broody bird maybe some others see them and decide to join in? I never had a broody EE until this year... and she is an old bird.

I am trying not to laugh because I know earthquakes can be terrifying, having experienced AND worked in 9-1-1 Centers during both the Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes..... But ... that's a rather vulnerable position and location in which to "ride out" an earthquake.

I felt it upstairs , it shook the ceiling fans pretty good so I realized it wasn't the kids on the back stairs. Hubby downstairs said "that's not and earthquake , don't you remember being in the bay for the Loma Prieta?"l I still stuffed the kids into a doorway and gave them their first "earthquake talk"

Linda - our girls must be related. My broody hatchery girl at 3 1/2 years old is also a RIR. She was a pain too, because she played musical nestboxes. She hatched 2 chicks and raised them well.

Hi all I am new and in the Sacramento area, nice to meet you all. Anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of a roo. I picked up what were supposed to be 6 pullets nine weeks ago, but my barred rock flexed HIS vocal cords this morning and I can't have roos. Looking to give him away to a nice home. My buff orpington is also showing signs of being a roo but (it) hasn't crowed yet so I will hang on to it until it does. I have posted the barred rock on craigslist, any other suggestions

Welcome to the thread, I'm in the foothills east of you.

Unfortunately there just aren't that many nice homes around for roos. Most of them will go in the freezer. Not a problem for most of us that eat our excess boys, but a problem for people that want them to be pets. I have to admit, I don't relish the idea of processing my girls.
