California - Northern

one of my silver ameraucana is acting lethargic somewhat. they have only been on paper towls I switched over to shavings this am. They have only been inside and there water dish has been the only thing outside. To be safe I added some corrid to there water. it is drinking fine. walking around but still somewhat puffy. wish me luck

Well it sounds like you have had just about all the different experiences you can have with a broody - so you are ready for everything next time.

Bella is a very pretty bird, very apt name.

Sorry to hear about Speedy's chick, predators are really hard on chicks. Not only foxes, but also birds like Crows and Blue Jays will kill and eat a chick ... unexpected.

That is odd about the 4 week old.. usually by then they are fast enough to get away from the attacker. I would keep an eye on Elanor. Her un-relenting attacks on Speedy sounds like she may be more aggressive. Watch her around her chicks. Some mommies chase the chicks off when they get older, I think 4 weeks was about the age my mother's broody chased off all her chicks. The chicks didn't want to be chased off and kept coming back. She only pecked them once to send them running, but Elanor may have been responsible for the demise of all of Speedy's other chicks.. so she might not be as nice if she wants something to go away...

The one left behind by Daisy may have had something else wrong - usually the mommy will come back to get them if they are standing there peeping loudly enough. My Silkie mommy still can't go up into the coop to sleep because her 4 haven't figured it out the ramp yet and they stand at the bottom yelling.

thanks, yes, my chief suspicion falls on Eleanor -- even though she is my friendliest bird toward ME, she's been much more aggressive than the others with both the other broodies and the chicks. she's also leaving her remaining chick, Max Jr., on his own more, and she allowed Max Sr. to mate with her for the first time (that i've seen) again yesterday afternoon, so hopefully her crazy-broody hormones are subsiding & she'll drop the viciousness as well.

and i've tried to check the coop each night for babies that can't navigate the ramp -- but of course there was one night i was out for a dinner til late, and that was the night the little isbar (i think) got "lost."

definitely will be ready for (almost) anything next time -- and will try to avoid having SO many broodies hatching at once!

good luck! i had a few lethargic chicks earlier this week, but Corid got them perked back up again...

Hi all I am new and in the Sacramento area, nice to meet you all. Anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of a roo. I picked up what were supposed to be 6 pullets nine weeks ago, but my barred rock flexed HIS vocal cords this morning and I can't have roos. Looking to give him away to a nice home. My buff orpington is also showing signs of being a roo but (it) hasn't crowed yet so I will hang on to it until it does. I have posted the barred rock on craigslist, any other suggestions
I have 10 roos and can only keep 4. I've never culled a chicken before and am so scared! We bought a high powered pellet gun. I just can't chop off a head. I feel more confident though because of all of the support on this thread to get through stuff like this. Definitely use us if you need us! And welcome!!!

Thanks! I love the California Greys so far. I would keep a bunch of them if I could.

Yep we are keeping Curly. We will see how things develop with him but I am thinking of choosing or picking up a few of smaller/ more mellow hens for him to coop with. I don't know if he will be an effective flockmaster but who knows He has surprised me so far.
That's awesome! Yes, he has surprised me too.. he really wants to live! :)

Urg.... lost another Jaerhon. Sand Hill shorted me two (made up for it by sending extra FJ) , two died so now I am down to 1. If color is an indication of sex, I would say it is a girl. The two that died were much much lighter. The Flame Jaerhons are doing well. I think I have 6-7 flames, including the one I put under a broody for a spanking.
Bummer. I hope the lone chick is a girl!

I've helped, but I haven't done the whole processing thing. I've done everything except the killing part. It's not super hard. Maybe some of us could get together and have a rooster processing party. I have 2 for sure (maybe more) that are going to need to be done. I figure that if you have to give them away, they are most likely going to meet the same end. If you keep them, at least they are going to be your dinner -- not someone else's.

Good idea!

Some pics from a week-ish ago of the flock.

Drunken dust bathing session!

Our Ameracuana Roo (who is even prettier now. We got him from Chickee)

Bab's our Brahma
I love the yellow color! Striking!

I put a fan in my incubator a little while ago. It holds temp way better now. I haven't had any temp fluctuations since I put it in. I'm locking down eggs tonight. Do I turn the fan off?
Nope. Keep it on! :)

It is a kinda cool fan. I has a blue light on it, so I can see the eggs without a flashlight. I got it for the ice chest incubator I was (am) making. I had it all put together, except for the thermostat. I've had a heck of a time finding one that would work for an incubator from a store. When ever I go and ask for help and tell them what I'm making they talk to me like I'm stupid and I don't know what I'm doing -- so frustrating!! So I gave up on that for now, and I put the fan in my Hovabator. These are the eggs from Jason (Hangtown Farms), so excited for them to hatch!! I saw both of the little blue ones wiggling, so hopefully I will get a little pair of OE's.
That light is pretty cool!

In case someone is looking for a flock of quality bantam buff Brahmas, I am selling my rooster and 4 hens. Rooster is Darlene Hobb's line and the 4 hens are from a trio purchased directly from John Neff. These 5 BBBs are 1 year olds and my pick birds out of 8 roosters and 8 hens. I have an ad for them here on BYC in the 8 weeks and older for sale section. Very calm and great layers. Proven breeders with high fertility.
They are beautiful! I'm sorry to hear you are having to get rid of them. I hope you find wonderful homes for all of them!

I am on my way down to SanJose for my grandmothers 87th. I always feel a pitter patter of nervousness when it's time to leave these mountains . While makings instruction sheet for dh... ( He is working the weekend and will have to also do all the chores:-0 ) 2cats, one black lab puppy , 6 -8 weekers in the backyard and 13 - 2 weekers in the living room , 24 trader joes in the bater for humidity experiment !

A prayer would be appreciated ;-)

I'm thinking to reward my trip back home with a TRIO or something fun. Anyone on that route... (Hoping deb sees this , haha) home on Monday?
Sincerely,
Plays With Fire
Oh gosh! I stayed home from Tahoe this weekend because I was too nervous to leave the chicks alone for 36 hours. So brave of you to trust the DH! hahaha I'm sending prayers!

You can probably pick up some pita pinta eggs on Monday. Have to go Monday morning to make sure we have the eggs but if you're in the area, it's better than shipping them! Also, are you interested in a cockerel pp? They'll be 5 weeks on Monday and we have 4 extras.

Ron - Yours are coming next week. I'm getting together all of the shipping supplies right now!

The two that had pipped, hatched. Five more have pips now! We have an informal competition with the other classes on hatch rates, and we are already beating one class! Looking really good to beat the other one, too. Thank goodness for calibrated thermometers.
Yay! That is going to be so much fun for the kids! What a great activity for the school to provide. I hope your class wins (because let's face it, that's even more fun!) haha
hello all, i've been off-line much of the week but popping in here again -- the weed-whacker guy is here yesterday and today, and i can't tell which the chickens enjoy more, stalking bugs in the tall grass or pouncing on them in the cut grass!

and the last broody, Frances' sister Bella, is finally hatching her eggs -- she only ended up with six -- so far two birchen marans have hatched, sit waiting on the third plus three SFHs -- here's one baby peeking out:

the broodies have not had perfect success with their chicks, though -- all but one of Speedy's chicks were killed by someone in the flock before i got the enclosure arrangements sorted out, and i got word from my neighbors, who i gave Speedy & her last chick to, that the chick got gobbled by a fox & her kit last night. also several very small ones weakened and died, one of Daisy's chicks apparently got left behind on the floor of the run one night (all the others figured out how to follow her up the ramp) and got too cold and died, and most disturbingly, one of Eleanor's four-week-olds got pecked to death over a single day, in the morning she was fine and in the evening when i got home from work she was all bloody and barely alive, and was too badly injured for me to be able to help. all that plus some eggs that didn't hatch means i've ended up with fewer chicks than i'd first imagined -- which may be a good thing, in the long run -- but it has been a rougher first-time-hatching-chicks experience than i had bargained for. hopefully the girls and i will all get better at this!

happily, the remaining chicks are all looking great -- here is Daisy with her five cutenesses:

hope everyone has a lovely holiday weekend!
I love where you live! The background always looks so lush and nature-ey. OMG you are having drama over there! I am so sorry you are having to deal with all of this. Think of it this way - you will be a pro by the time this is over and nothing will phase you next time! :) You are doing a great job!!

Your chicks do not need Corid. Corid is for cocci. They will not get cocci in two days. Most do not get cocci until they have been exposed to something from the outside, and it probably takes 6 days for them to build up to a harmful level. Corid blocks the absorption of nutrients - which slows down the growth of cocci. It also can cause curled toes and other defects in the chick. I would not dose with Corid unless they show severe signs.

You might want to add electrolites (save-a-chick) to the water to help perk them up. The home-made remedy is sugar water.

You can also add Apple Cider Vinegar to the water to toughen their intestines up (acid) which will help them fight off cocci later. I believe its 1 tsp per qt of water.

Is there a homemade replacement for corid? I have 2 that are lethargic and they're the last 2 to hatch yesterday
You probably don't need to give them Corid if they are only a day old. I would try putting some Save-A-Chick Electrolytes and Save-A-Chick Probiotics in their water. Also, Poly-V-Sol (without Iron) baby drops work well in helping them perk up. I accredit it to saving 5 of my chicks when they came out. You can also give the little guys some plain yogurt. Try to get regular yogurt not light. Sorry if you know all of this already!

Oh ok thank you! I thought corid was an electrolyte haha. Thanks for the clarification

Yogurt is a good idea, I don't have any of the drops though. I'll give yogurt and see what they do, probably roll in it and make a mess haha

yes my lethargic chicks were 3 weeks at the time -- sorry, should have been more clear. the whole flock gets ACV in their water, all the time, and they get yogurt now and then as a treat.
