I'm so excited for my chickies to go live in their coop! Either tonight or tomorrow... but they have to come back in tomorrow to the brooder during the afternoon, because it's supposed to hit 113. Ick.

I am at day 4 with my chicks outside. So far, uneventful and they appear to like new digs. I think we are OK heat wise. I currently have 2 bantam Cochins and they never panted today. My Norwegian Jaerhon and my Cream Legbar did pant a little. They all decreased their activity level significantly from about 4-6:30. By 6:50 or so the bigger girls had stopped panting at all and were back in action around their run. It's 110 in the shade, on my covered deck. 89 inside with the swamp cooler running (we have no AC). Which is why I snicker when people talk about their chickens needing AC.
Almost all the chickens are panting. Not excessively so, I don't think. Ron, your Penes and UofA's look about the same. Panting a little, but ok. I have a feed pan of water in there because it's easier to refill. One of the UofA's likes to stand in it. Smart bird, that one. I hosed the sand down in there, but maybe they would prefer a pool.
The most comfortable are the chicks/youngsters running around on the lawn under the mulberry trees. And the broodies, they aren't panting. Weird.
The youngest chicks in the stock tank brooder were panting. I put in an ice pack, which they are standing on. DH put a fan in that coop, so hopefully that will help.
One of my older Dork pullets died this morning. No symptoms, no panting. She isolated herself, didn't want to go in the coop last night. Seemed fine, otherwise, then just died. I didn't have time to take her to Davis but everyone else is fine, other than hot.

Yep.Is that a wood stove? I can just see them dancing haha
all we want as of now is a pink egg layer. Anyone have one or two chicks that will grow to lay pink eggs??
So my two broodys are now free roaming with the rest of the flock. Chicks are about 4 weeks now. (Except my hatchery RIR who decided to go broody a few weeks ago. She seems to be the most protective yet...) Everyone is happy! And what a great channel to watch from my livingroom window. Nothing like broodys with their chicks! And the little Serama and Bantom Cochin Frizzle from Deb are the cutest thing I've ever seen!all we want as of now is a pink egg layer. Anyone have one or two chicks that will grow to lay pink eggs??
