California - Northern

I'm so excited for my chickies to go live in their coop! Either tonight or tomorrow... but they have to come back in tomorrow to the brooder during the afternoon, because it's supposed to hit 113. Ick.

It's 110 in the shade, on my covered deck. 89 inside with the swamp cooler running (we have no AC). Which is why I snicker when people talk about their chickens needing AC.

Almost all the chickens are panting. Not excessively so, I don't think. Ron, your Penes and UofA's look about the same. Panting a little, but ok. I have a feed pan of water in there because it's easier to refill. One of the UofA's likes to stand in it. Smart bird, that one. I hosed the sand down in there, but maybe they would prefer a pool.

The most comfortable are the chicks/youngsters running around on the lawn under the mulberry trees. And the broodies, they aren't panting. Weird.

The youngest chicks in the stock tank brooder were panting. I put in an ice pack, which they are standing on. DH put a fan in that coop, so hopefully that will help.

One of my older Dork pullets died this morning. No symptoms, no panting. She isolated herself, didn't want to go in the coop last night. Seemed fine, otherwise, then just died. I didn't have time to take her to Davis but everyone else is fine, other than hot.
I am at day 4 with my chicks outside. So far, uneventful and they appear to like new digs. I think we are OK heat wise. I currently have 2 bantam Cochins and they never panted today. My Norwegian Jaerhon and my Cream Legbar did pant a little. They all decreased their activity level significantly from about 4-6:30. By 6:50 or so the bigger girls had stopped panting at all and were back in action around their run.

I don't know what excessive panting signs are. I do not have a mister but I did wet down the sand in their run a bit. Tomorrow could well be hotter and I'd like to know danger signs. Thanks! Sorry about your pullet. It would break my heart to loose one now, but I realize that is part of the risk when taking on chickens.
Frizzle, Tilly, Inga (on pail), and Ting at 7 pm - became active again after worst of heat passed.

I noticed they did drink lots of water during the day. Here is my frizzle Cochin bantam getting a drink. I'm fairly certain gender is roo. Will wait until more feathers come in to find a new home for him. So far, although he is 7 1/2 weeks old, I cannot find any pictures that match his markings. He is healthy and happy and apparently clueless that he's any different from the girls. (Yet.)

OMG. I felt bad in our heat here in Sacramento. Thank you for putting this into perspective! Best wishes for graduation day for your chicks. Mine are just outside this week, and I bet I couldn't get them back into the brooder now that they've tasted the great outdoors.

Is that a wood stove? I can just see them dancing haha
Yep.

. I had to have "help" keeping them in one place.

So my two broodys are now free roaming with the rest of the flock. Chicks are about 4 weeks now. (Except my hatchery RIR who decided to go broody a few weeks ago. She seems to be the most protective yet...) Everyone is happy! And what a great channel to watch from my livingroom window. Nothing like broodys with their chicks! And the little Serama and Bantom Cochin Frizzle from Deb are the cutest thing I've ever seen! ;) all we want as of now is a pink egg layer. Anyone have one or two chicks that will grow to lay pink eggs?? :)

Bantam-iPhones... Gotta love em

I have a broody Marans girl and then 4 days in a black sex link decided to join her! Well they're crowding each other out of the box. Whenever the Marans goes to eat or drink the BSL jumps in her box! I have been on patrol for a day and a half trying to keep her out of there. Anyone have similar experiences?
