Ron, Just want to let you know that the RIR chicks are doing wonderfully well! They are fat, little things and very friendly! They get along famously with my 2 Bresse chicks. I still need to snap some pics. Maybe today since I won't be doing much in the way of backyard chores due to the heat. I wasn't really planning on adding another breed to our list but we will probably try them and see how they do with eggs & meat. I'm suspecting 1 boy and 3 girls at this point. The 3 have little tails, more feathering on their wings and starting with feathers on their wing bows. The little boy has no tail, little wing feathering, and no feathering on the wing bows. I was thinking about possibly using them to try to make hybrid bluebells. If we decide not to keep them, I just learned yesterday that one of my friends who has chickens has always wanted heritage RIRs! How is that for Providence?!

If the rain becomes a problem you can use a tarp on the side where the rain blows in.

thanks! i'm thinking of getting a piece of canvas made that could be snapped on to the side... but will see how it fares in an actual rainstorm first. i don't NEED the second pen at this point -- but glad to have the option!

That is great news! I did try to pick pullets for you--It is kind of hard with 5 day old chicks....

LOL! I think that you did a great job! I'm always happy with 50% girls so I'll be thrilled if I end up with 75% girls.

I think ray is a pullet. I really like the colors too.

Oh good Ron. That's what I thought too. Thank you! at 6 weeks I would think there would be more comb if she was a he. I am really excited to see how she feathers. right now she is mottled black and red. I appreciate so much your giving her a look.

My husband took me over to the Mendocino Coast for a belated anniversary get away. We stayed at Mar Vista Cottages which I highly recommend! http://www.marvistamendocino.com/ They have about 100 hens Jersey Giants, Wyandottes, Hatchery RIRs and New Hamshires, Delawares and bunches of EE ...and one Jersey Giant cockerel that they are trying to rehome. They have a unique set up. The owner knew nothing about chickens when he bought the place and they decided to have farm fresh eggs for their guests so he said he sort of worked out the housing so it suited him. He has in the same big enclosure both roosting coops and separate laying coops. It works for them. DH and I helped collect about 80 eggs from them. Have any of you ever heard fs separating the laying from the roosting before?

Anyway...beat the heat how you can today!

Ok, I have a question.
I ordered 3 dz eggs, and a dz were broken.. no padding on the side of the boxes, and 3 boxes were taped together with no fragile marks or anything.

Would you mention to the seller they might want to put packing on the sides? the eggs were very well bubble wrapped, so no noxious egg crap got on the other eggs, so they clearly are paying attention, and not just idiots. But then again, that could mean they are set in their ways. They would have survived ( or some of them at least) with a 1/2 inch of newspaper around the side.

I just don't want to start a confrontation if there is no chance they will listen. I will try and be tactful, just not sure if its worth it...
I would let them know how many were broken myself.

This stuff okay to use as bedding in my chicken coop?
It's fine, but I prefer Mallard Creek because it has larger flakes.

I noticed they did drink lots of water during the day. Here is my frizzle Cochin bantam getting a drink. I'm fairly certain gender is roo. Will wait until more feathers come in to find a new home for him. So far, although he is 7 1/2 weeks old, I cannot find any pictures that match his markings. He is healthy and happy and apparently clueless that he's any different from the girls. (Yet.)
I'm POSITIVE you have a cockerel there.

Quote: I'm going to say cockerel but it's still pretty early to tell.

It's going to be a HOT ONE...My daughter is Graduating High School today. I'm having about 50 people to the house. Going to be a wonderful day

You should know soon--watch the wattles. If they start growing and turning pink, then a pullet.
Ray is a Del crossed with a Production red?
