Thanks! I really do think that is where I saw it. Happy Chooks that is the place I go to when I need anything out of the ordinary. They carry every alternative health thing you can think of. They charge you a pretty penny for it but at least I can get it.

So should I put this in their drinking water for everyone or just give the afflicted chicks a drop each?

Nope, not giving them the medicated feed. All I could get my hands on is the Scratch and Peck which is organic, non-gmo, non-medicated, non-cheap brand. Well I guess I could have gotten the Purina feed, but you know......



I have the Scratch and peck non soy non corn. It was a free sample since The Feed Store has not been able to get the Freedom Starter for me.
Are you giving them grit with it? The instructions and the Sales Rep say you need to give them Chick grit along with Scratch and Peck starter.

Well they have been on sand since the beginning and I have given them chick grit too, but no one told me that they needed to have the grit and I didn't get any instructions with mine. The tag was missing. So THANKFULLY I did it right just by luck.

I have seen a treat ball for chickens. Things like cabbage go into it and the chickens have to work to get it out. Entertaining them is not really what you do--Chickens like to work so the ball gives them work and that makes them happy.

My layers love it when I mow the lawn and give them their grass clippings. You should see them in the Fall when I let them have the leaves from the trees!

I use one the suet cages to put things in. grapes, apples, cabbage , greens.... I just have never set it up in one of the quarantine pens. Since my chickens are always in runs I try and replicate as many natural behavior opportunities as I can in the run. They do work for some of their food, between the things that get hung in the run and the things that get buried under leaves and pine needles, I have used the pinecones with peanut butter and scratch. They love those! I give them things to sit on , climb on, things to dig up, plants to nibble on etc. We dont have enough leaves.. Im sure they would love them. Mine get mostly pine needles to scratch around in. I dont ever give mine grass clippings.. i think it comes from not giving them to horses. i need to change that.

Jason, what kind of pennedesenca did you already give me? That wasn't Crele, was it?
I have four hens from that batch, and the beautiful white hen...they are getting big. I love them.
Heat hardy will be nice. I lost a big beautiful blue Orpington the other day due to the heat. She had been sitting on eggs for a few weeks.
It was 106 that day and I was busy with my daughters graduation. She must have gotten to hot

another hen has taken over her eggs...

That sucks, I'm sorry! Our Orpington we got from you was panting a lot during the weekend as well. LOL they didn't understand that the mad woman with the hose was trying to HELP them. I can't believe how BIG she is getting!! She's only 12 weeks old and is bigger than some of our friend's hens!

Which they LOVE. We put scratch inside and they play what is best described as chicken soccer. One of them ( who remains to be caught) has figured this thing out though and the game doesn't last long.

I have not had any trouble with aphids since putting DE under my bedding in the coop. The coop bedding then gets composted and added to the boxes.

I did get a handful of blueberries a couple of days ago - that was nice! I got them before the birds did!

I was wondering how I was going to keep birds at bay once we plant a acre of blue berries

I have to leave in 30 minutes for baked goods judging today, got all my entries in last night. 49 of them!!! I only scratched two entries, cream puffs & coffeecake. Around 5:15 I totally ran out of oompf and called it good. Loaded up the car and headed for the fairgrounds. After we dropped off my entries, we went to the local brewery had a hamburger and a beer. It was nice just sitting and being waited on after all the baking and quick dinners for the last two weeks.

Beautiful!! When did you plant? My daughter planted early and hers is like yours. We planted the week of Mother's Day but I've been using my special fertilizer so they're going crazy!!! I think it's going to be a good year!

Got rid of my confirmed Icelandic boy and my suspected Icelandic boy yesterday. A colleague of mine took them and I told him that I would let him know where he can get a pullet or two. I got mine from Deann but she hatched them from eggs she got in a BYC swap so I I don't think she breeds them but I know Happy Chooks and Debs Flock both do right?

I had to split up my choc rock pair :-( I am keeping the pullet...Godiva who is as sweet as her name and will be coop mates with Curly and my little Porking, Petunia. But I couldn't keep him. I told my colleague that he may be able to get hatching eggs from Renee but he has no bator yet. When I get a broody I may buy half dozen from her and try to hatch him a little girl. I wasn't going to keep the pullet but she is an on your arm, shoulder, head curious little lap chicken and she is cool looking so what was I to do?

I have encouraged him to join BYC and this forum in particular and will do so again but if any one else breeds Icelandics and may have pullets for him can you let me know. Thanks

I envy those of you with gardens. I love to garden and grew up growing things. It's like magic. I think that maybe next year if we can figure out a way to keep chickens and deer and peacocks out and still have it be attractive we may give it a go! At Mar Vista where My DH took me for our anniversary they have raised beds made from cinder blocks. Herbs and flowers were planted in the holes in the cinder blocks and other stuff was planted in the beds.

Going to put the finish touches on the quarantine pen today. I will give them a head of cabbage but what sort of things should I give my new ones while they are in there to help them deal with the confinement? I have closed off one end of the feed shed so they can have some space outside the XL dog kennel but it is still all inside space since the girls free range. Any Idea?? the space is about 4 feet deep by 5.5 feet wide.

Help! What's going on with my SL Polish?

Do you have just one SL Polish? It may be a Polish thing. Some breeds feather slowly and it does not take too much feather pulling to bare their skin.

Upping the protein often stops feather picking. Calf Mana or mixing in some Turkey grower may help. You could also pick up some Ultrakibble for Chicks from TSC.

You might want to get some Blu Kote on the bare skin.

Well they have been on sand since the beginning and I have given them chick grit too, but no one told me that they needed to have the grit and I didn't get any instructions with mine. The tag was missing. So THANKFULLY I did it right just by luck.

I would give the liquid B vitamins to all of them until the curled toes are better. They give them some once a week to make sure they have enough.

You could also give them Rooster Booster or another vitamin with electrolytes once a week or so.

Walmart and CVS pharmacy carry the liquid B complex also. May be cheaper than health food store.
