For quarinteen the things you are worried about is where you touch them and the poop. So I always change shoes. And bleach my hands. If I pick up a bird I change my shirt.

Thanks Deann.   I kind of wish they were.   Maybe the Dorking half will pull through with the broody impulse. Hmm but  after reading Laura's broody hen soap opera maybe I don't want that after all.  

Has anyone here borrowed or loaned a rooster for a mating?   Seems like it would be a bit of a pain what with the quarantine thing.   What about show birds?   Do you quarantine  between shows? 

Also how careful do I have to be re walking in the quarantine pen and then into the coops where my existing flock lives should I change shoes? and do I need to sanitize my hands and change my shirt between new and existing if I have handled the new ones?  Last night in order to bribe the affection of the new birds I went out there with yogurt.   Gave a bunch to the OC (original coop) then brought it out to the new ones who were not interested in it in the least.   Anyway do I need to use separate containers and mixing utensils etc or if I give whatever to the OC first am I good or am I just being absurdly careful?

Well I like the Australorps too I had two before and I love the color in the sun. Hatchery quality is fine, but maybe we should wait until your better quality pullet is ready then that will give me time to get my stuff together. Everything is a mess from this last hatch. I literally have a layer of dust on EVERYTHING and it is driving me nuts. I am talking a layer like a haunted house layer of dust. I am thinking..... two months maybe? I hate to hatch too close to winter though. They should still hopefully be okay then. Plus I have to see if the new thermostat on my incubator works. I just got the replacement in the mail.

Black Langshans have that beautiful green/purple sheen in the sunlight, too!

Langshans are one of the foundational breeds for Australorps!

Bleach your hands? With my sensitive white skin I would be covered with rashes.

Washing with soap and water while singing happy birthday to me two times should do it(What movie was that in?)

LOL! I've been waiting, too! We are working on the pens again this Saturday and as soon as they are finished, we can separate the colors for breeding. I have been hatching a few of the eggs just for fun and to add to the egg laying flock. I currently have 2 black and 2 blue chicks that hatched this past weekend. They are so cute and really stand out in a brooder full of yellow Bresse chicks!

LOL! I've been waiting, too! We are working on the pens again this Saturday and as soon as they are finished, we can separate the colors for breeding. I have been hatching a few of the eggs just for fun and to add to the egg laying flock. I currently have 2 black and 2 blue chicks that hatched this past weekend. They are so cute and really stand out in a brooder full of yellow Bresse chicks!

Okay, okay! Today! I need to shuffle the brooders around and move them into a bigger one. First I have to catch the scalped quail that is currently living in isolation in my big brooder. It is a crazy bird that I'm starting to believe wasn't scalped by the others but scalped itself by flying into the hardware cloth. It has already gotten loose in the spare room once and we were fortunate to be able to catch it. I have almost decided that raising bobwhites is not for me. I have limited space and would rather be using their pens to raise more chickens.

At some point I'll be asking all you lovely chicken people if you'd like a rooster. We have three, but plan on keeping two since they all get along.

I have read about Quail doing stuff like that.
