Broody Update: Day Nine

Little Miss Zsa Zsa, once sweet as pie, is taking this broody thing pretty seriously. I went to check on her in her nesting box this morning and she let out a screech that sounded like the dragons on G.O.T.

I opted NOT to stick my hand inside and pet her.

Look how sweet she used to be!
Cute picture. My BR is sweet as can be UNTIL she is broody. When she is broody, she means business and she takes out chunks of skin when she pecks at you. Hurts like heck! (as I look at my wounded hand now) She raised 2 sets of babies last year and is raising 2 babies that she hatched a few days ago.

Got 2 broodies raising babies now, 2 more that hatch in a couple of weeks, and another that will get eggs next week. Gotta space them out some. LOL.

As for naming chickens - some of mine are named, some are not. Our originals were named by the kids, so we still have Marshmallow, Stripes, Speckles, and Red. Lost Chipmunk this year to internal laying at 4 years old. Tweety and Chicken Little died a couple of years ago. Chicken Little to a hawk, and Tweety to her own stupidity. (she was under the coop and got spooked - went to fly away and broke her neck on the bottom of the coop)

I now let my chickens name themselves by their looks or personalities. Not everyone has names though, I just have too many. My son called the 2 English Orps "The Fat Girls", though we only have 1 left now. My barnevelder rooster got named Skippy because he had a slight limp and when he would come running to me he looked like he was skipping. Mouse is a teeny little thing that squeaks and scampers like a mouse. My welsummer rooster is Moose, because he was huge as a chick.

Silver Grey Dorkings fly fairly well too.

This is an SG Dorking, Corwin in my plumb tree.

Haha...just goes to show you. Just because you have short legs you can still reach great heights

I'd vote Willa................I just like it. Sounds like a chicken name.

And the Dorking..................maybe a bit irreverent, but stretch the Dorking to dorky and go with comediennes. I vote for Gilda (as in Radner). I still get sad when I think about her death. (And she took my man...........I had a thing for Gene Wilder

I was leaning towards Willa too and I <3 Gilda I think that's perfect! Sorry she took your man. Gene is/was quite the catch. I always went for the funny man. As a result some of the best comedy I get is when DH and I and are 3 kids are hanging out. I am more of the appreciator they are all tremendously funny!

My dog is a German Shepherd.
I thought it might be a protector type. Our dogs are the "put on a good show but run for it at the first sign of real danger type." Our biggest won't go out the back door if the chickens are there since Della pecked him on the foot.

I am one of those folks who names chickens (and geese and turkeys and a FEW of the ducks). They name themselves, for the most part. Not sure why they are partial to people names, though. ;)

I never understood how people could have names for pets already selected. One of my best friends does that: "I'm adopting a small mixed breed puppy and his name will be Charlie.". What if he just ISN'T a Charlie?!? The shelter had named the puppy something else, but 10 weeks old, that name was merely a marketing ploy of cuteness. (She found the shelter's website with the litter of puppies up for adoption, individually photographed.)

Last year I was gifted with several two day old BCM/Silkie cross chicks. I kept four pullets and gave a pair (cockerel and pullet) to HHandbasket. We called the mixed breed chicks "Milkies" as a group, or "one of the Milkies is broody again." The pullets - now hens - are IDENTICAL and are nearly always broody.

One has been raising her brood of nine chicks in my fenced garden. She named herself Penelope. It turns out HHandbasket's "Penny," one of her sisters, is short for Penelope. So now we call all four of my Milkie hens "The Penelopes.". Two have chicks, two are on nests.

Exciting!! We thought one of our Silver Spangled Hamburgs got taken by a hawk... We found her several days later on a nest with 25 of her and her sisters eggs in the side of our boat... We rehomed them (SSH sisters) but stuck the eggs that looked like they were developing under our RIR (I'm not all that good at really knowing what I'm looking for)...

One Hatched this am! I'm floored! Our EE Roo is the daddy... I didn't even think he could mate them... And not a mix I would have selected but I'm sure they'll be interesting.

There's 15 or so more eggs under her.. We'll see how many actually hatch.

The chick is grayish/black. Very cute and little!

Ill posts a pic when I get one. :) :)

LOL two Roos turned into TEN Roos?!

Well, we could start a cockle doodle do choir.....
One of my Bresse crowed this morning a real crow this time--Very cute crow. Now of course I need to move them to the farm.

PetRock, tell you husband that they do have a nice manly crow!

Congratulations!

The only way you can tell is by cracking the egg so of course they won't hatch after that...

Pictures were taken from my phone, so they are not the greatest.

Dusty and her 2 babies:

My Icelandic hen and her 4 babies. The OE that looked blue last night now looks black. Ah well.

This one shows the chicks better, but my hen is blurry.
