So Animal Control picked up Duke today, and brought him home. Still no sign of Penelope. He smells like he tried to play with a skunk, and his poor feet are all worn down and bloody. I'll try to give him a bath later to get rid of the skunk smell.

so sorry you haven't found your other pup. One of ours was sprayed by a skunk last fall and I found this recipe for removing the smell. It worked great! We left it on him for around 15 minutes. Good luck with the bath and hope your Penelope finds her way home soon

My adult Dels are a MESS!!! and are currently dustbathing in the side garden. Della looks like she got something sticky on her which now has dirt clinging to it. I think tomorrow will be bath day.

Are the ones with the head feathers Amelias? They are really crossed with Crested Cream Legbars. Those feathers are the Crest from the CCL. I have two with crests.

No. They are "Ameraucanas" from Privett. Between my uncle and I we have 3 and they all have them. They don't grow out on top and the don't stick out like ear tufts do but they have these cool longer feathers that cling to their head and extend back from behind their ears.

Did you put them under her at night?  If you did not - she does not recognize them, that's why she is pecking them and driving them off.  If you did - then she is a prejudiced against their color - and she won't take care of them.

Take them away from her - she does not like them and she may kill them.  Whether it is from pecking them - or from driving them off and not letting them get warm.. and she could go so far as to abandon the eggs she is sitting on.   You will have to brood them separately.

Some hens are great at taking care of whatever color and they don't care - others don't like certain colored chicks - no clue why.

I did it in the light. But his them then slipped them under her... They didn't come out for about 2 hours... Should I try again tonight?

You can try tonight when its dark. Maybe her listening to them all night peeping and her talking back to them will help.

However, it might not - you will have to watch them tomorrow morning. If she is puffing up at them and warning them - it doesn't sound like she likes their looks though.

I only have Internet on my phone... I don't see a pencil. Maybe I'm missing it or mobile version doesn't have it. And my auto correct is insane.

Thank you for the info!! I brought them in. We'll try tonight and see what happens.
Ah... And here goes the red light again.. ;)

We have decided to build a wine fridge incubator with our daughter as a project. It will be months before it is ready.....as we have to gather all the needed hardware, etc.
We want to do it as cheaply as possible, but don't want it looking poorly put together either.
We are hoping to move before the end of the year to a place with more property, so our goal is to have it ready by then.

Has anyone done this before? Any tips or tricks?

I haven't built one - but I rebuilt my Sportsman cabinet incubator. My tip - get an electronic thermostat! They are cheaper than the wafers - they control the temperatures very well - and if you order one now it will probably be here by the time you need it (it comes from China).

ok, I've decided to try moving at least some of the chicks, all raised by broody moms (six have moms that have since moved on & returned to laying, five have moms who are still somewhat attentive), over to one of the new pens -- only trouble is, the chicks are all afraid of me. am hoping to wait til it gets dark & scoop them up while sleeping -- wish me luck! as i have no idea how else to corral them into the new space...

I have been eying those on ebay. I think they also have a hygrometer I can order at the same time.
