I see Ron sent you the info. It's handy to have on hand since you don't usually plan for losing a chicken. Don't forget to post pics of the new chicks! I have three broodies right now and one nest should be hatching. I've been lifting the wings of mom to see if anything hatched but I'm resisting doing that now because I realized that it's just like opening the incubator during lockdown so I'm leaving mom until I see a head pop out to say hi! Lot's of peeps in your area....which can be good or bad as far as chicken math.
I'm sorry about your chick. I had FOUR cross beaks from one hatch a couple of months ago! I'm trying to figure out why. I think I know the hen they came from. Anyway, just a little FYI, it's much easier to cull when they're tiny.

Thanx guys for the responses, very excited to see local chicken folks up here - we are new to the area, and dont really know our (few) neighbors yet.....
And I think we have the only Rooster in the area (we are under county not city ordinances)...

Im shutting off the bator for the summer so I can spend more time with my kids and less time worrying about the babies. My last hatch will be on 6/29. It is going to be weird not having little peepers around.

Does anyone on here have fertile eggs for hatching in the following breeds/colors?

Blue, black or splash silkies
White silkies
Partridge silkies
Plymouth barred rocks

I'm looking for good quality in the silkies and just backyard layers in the barred rocks.

My silkies are either broody or only laying once a week....so I really want more eggs to incubate rather than 4 at a time! I live in Rio Linda and would love to meet up to get more hatching eggs.
Deb stole my thunder by posting before me. I'm gonna say it anyway.................

It's a pretty safe bet that ANY breed you are looking for, Deb most likely has it.

Anyone have experience with Russian Orloffs or Javas?

Yes, I had 2 mottled javas. They would not go outside EVER. They literally stayed inside the coop. They were timid birds with no personality. I gave them away as egg layers.

Good news!! Penny came home yesterday morning. At 2:30 am we heard scratching and whining at the front door. DH went out to check, and there she was.

and, I think I got an egg from a Cornish X. It is double yolked (my first double yolk). How can I tell if it's fertile?
So glad your dog came back and yes, that egg is fertile. Do not hatch double yolkers though.

Ron. I didn't see it on the report but do you know if Davis tests for mg?

Good morning everyone. If you count pumpkins who decided she is only sitting on eggs in the afternoon and evening I have 10 broodies and 1 flirting with it. Add that I have 4 hens with chicks and I have almost as many sitting as laying.

One of the breese is thinking about it too....
Yes, UCD does test for MG. If it is a necropsy it is free but you have to ask in advance. If you want your live birds tested you can send them either a blood test or throat swap. If I recall, the blood tests are 5 cents per sample and the Swap tests are $17 per bird. Blood tests are clearly more reasonable. : )

Weird...I like a bird with personality but am thinking I will give these guys a shot down the road.

Jason I will let you know what happens with the little birds. I changed my mind and am just putting them into the toples run for a few hours....they may end up in the trees anyway

Awwww..... I keep telling myself I'm going to stop hatching for a while after this hatch. I think I might have a problem, I keep finding new breeds that I "need".
