I guess I shouldn't tell you about the REALLY odd stuff I have.....................Tomaru Longcrowers, Auburn Sumatras, Black Bresse, Crele Orpintons..................ummm, I'd have to think about what else is out there, LOL

Sounds like a fun line up. I went hog wild and swapped a bunch of eggs with other breeders. It is really fun having a bunch of breeds that I am not familiar with. I think my favorite are the Brabanters I hatched from Molly. They are soooo darn cute. I also acquired a flock of Olansk Drawfs from Dyanne (Chooklet) which I adore. I will get a picture of them soon.

Awwww..... I keep telling myself I'm going to stop hatching for a while after this hatch. I think I might have a problem, I keep finding new breeds that I "need".

Problem? What problem? You put the eggs in the bator, they hatch, you take em out..... No Problem.

I've been hatching Bresse and I'm tired of plain colored chicks that I can hardly tell apart. I must bring home more Langshan eggs from the farm or find some different eggs to hatch!

Edited to say, I'm not really tired of the cute little fuzz balls but I would like a variety pack to add to the group!
If you want some pretty colored chicks, you should try Debs Lakkenvelders. Those are the cutest chicks ....... ever!

Sounds like od are harder to Breed than I thought? They seem like the perfect breed for my location.... Ahh back to the thinking board.... Snow hardy, sweet, calm Roos, multipattern landrace...
Perhaps I am heading for serama? But what on earth do people do with their culls? Make toothpicks!?!
I have a flock of OD and even tho the fertility is awesome, they are hard to hatch. They often develop right up til the end and quit before pipping. I think the hatch rate will improve over time. I used to have the same issues with the SFH. When I started building my Swedish Flock I almost gave up because I had a terrible time getting them to hatch and now they hatch out fine.

On the Swedish thread some people have suggested that the SFH are not used to our commercial feed and do not absorb the nutrients cause vit. deficiencies. I think the same may be true of the OD. I put my OD breeders on probios and vitamines and it will be interesting to see if the hatch rate improves. Since I am not hatching for awhile, I will need to rely on feedback from shipped eggs. I just shipped eggs to Utah, so I will let you know how they do.

Im shutting off the bator for the summer so I can spend more time with my kids and less time worrying about the babies.  My last hatch will be on 6/29.    It is going to be weird not having little peepers around.

I will be shutting my off for about a month or so after I finish hatching the chicks in it.
I opened ALL my coops the other day. Everyone is free ranging together. I wanted to give everyone a break. I have hundreds of grow outs and really need to get a handle on this mess.. :) letting them out will assure I will not incubate :)

BCM hatched today on day 19 the 108 degree day must of pushed the hatch date up lol. There are 7 other eggs under mama chicken hope to have more babies in the am.
Congrats!

She almost certinly have mites so spray with permectin (sp) if you have it.

Molly - let me know when you pen them back up and they are pure again. I really do want some of those Brabanters.

I'm going to scrounge what I can from deb... But if you are driving distance from Tahoe I will start begging your spare od! I don't mind the work, it's just so hard to put together a flock to work with in this area... I am OFF shipping for now!

I cleaned mine up and put it away.....but my girls took up right where I left off. Checked on the three broodies yesterday morning and heard peeping and sure enough, a little chick pops out! It was funny, the 12 Marans had moved themselves out of the grow out pen and into the layers coop about a week ago and the night before the chick hatched, when I went to put them away they were all outside the coop, settling in. I shooed them in and found Miss Bossy guarding the door. I got her out of the way and put them away. I figured the chicks were hatching. Last night when I was putting them away another one of the chickens was running around popping the little ones on the heads and running them out again. It's really the cutest thing! I can almost hear them saying, "You kids get out of here, Cindy is trying to have a baby here!"
