California - Northern

Thanks for all the growing up pictures, love those teenagers! I have a few of my own - but my pictures are usually focused on the bars of the pen - and fuzzy on the chickens...
I haven't been on here in a while. We've had a lot going on. Lots of family stuff. Plus something was taking off with all our chicks. Everyday we would come out more babies were missing. Our one broody was down to 1 baby at one point. Hawks. DARN hawks. So now broodies and babies locked up until they babies are about 6 weeks old. We have had those ages out and still doand the hawks haven't been praying on them. Only the 1-3 week old chicks. Dang!

All I have left after hatching Speckled Sussex, Rhodebars, and CLs are 1 SS and 3 CLs (2 boys and 1 girl. actually wanted the boys). Not sure what happened but one of our 2 leghorns injured herself (leg) and after a few weeks of it just getting worse, then the others picking on her we had to cull this weekend. SO sad about that. We loved our leggies. When the next broody strikes- I am hatching up some more TJs leghorns and giving them to the broody. My bator has been silent for over a month now. Go me! :)

Anyway...I didn't think we had issues with predation here. Watch the skies!

Sorry about loosing the birds. My "babies" are outside playing with a net over the top - and lots of roosters to watch the skies. When one of them sounds the alert all the babies freeze or run for the cat carrier. I sure hope nobody comes any closer. We do have crows that hang around the area - and small birds that chase off hawks too.

I happen to have 4 SS that I hatched.. and I was watching them today. I may have 3 boys and one girl. If that is the case then I would have two boys to re-home. They are from SQ Kemp/Scott Lines from GabbleBabble here on BYC. I also have an extra Double Laced Barnvelder boy - got two of those. The are almost 4 weeks old now. In another week I may be able to tell what I actually have - I think.

I have been allergic to Wheat since puberty. I am very grateful that this problem has come to the attention of the major retailers - because now I can get Gluten Free items I haven't had to eat without guilt for over 30 years...

I also agree that many people have negative reactions to food that are common - and testing the allergies by removing the foods is the best way to find out what they are. Most of those cleansing diets do just that.

Wheat is one of the nastiest ones - because wheat is (was) cheap they used it for a thickener in everything. Even some marshmallows used to use wheat starch to hold them together - and the starch is what I am allergic to. Corn is another really bad one... Milk and Eggs are much easier to avoid. Sugar is a pizzer because its another one that causes cravings - especially if you eat red meat (you need sugar to digest it properly).

Unfortunately obsessive food cravings are one possible indicator of allergic reactions. If you crave it - you may be allergic to it

Most people are probably allergic to chocolate - just think.. sugar AND milk AND caffeine. Make that into a chocolate cake - and you just added Wheat and Eggs - I think that covers just about all of them...

I have coturnix and bobwhite quail (yeah, yeah Kelly, I know). There is absolutely no question, it's the coturnix (Japanese) you are looking for. They hatch in 16 days, and 42 days later they start to lay eggs or are ready to process.

Bobwhites take longer to hatch than chickens and just as long to reach maturity (for eggs or processing), about 5 mos.

If you want me to collect some quail eggs for you, let me know, I get 2-3 dozen per day.
They lay in 42 days?!?! Count me in!!

I'll send you a PM.

The chicks hatched!! I have 8 of the 9 that went into lockdown. One didn't make it

. Much better than last time. I have SLW, BLRW, and Black Wyandottes. They are so cute!!

I know some of you guys have (or had) Quail. Does anyone know a good place to get some hatching eggs, and which breed would be best for meat and eggs?

They are very nice looking and it is great to hatch 8 out of 9.

I have one pip so far.

Do you have the Jumbo Cots? I gave my first hatched cots to SilkieRose. I do want them for the eggs too. I just like the smaller eggs for some reason and I want to research the "health" benefits too. When do they stop laying? October? November?

Ali - the body and tail look more pullet like, but that comb is pretty pronounced for an 8 week old chick. I don't see any cockerel coloring in the wings either. Maybe it is a pullet and she's just a fast developer.

I'm not familiar with the breed, but it looks as though the hens have pretty small combs.

Let's hope it is a she.....

took some more chick update pictures -- in case of interest!

one of the new SFH girls -- Ali, they are probably the same age as your chick, so maybe can compare comb etc?

and the other, who might have slightly more red in her plumage?

max jr. (CL/SFH cross)in front, who is almost 9 weeks and looking more and more like a girl! plus the two CL chicks, nearly 6 weeks -- Charlotte (reaching up) is getting a wee crest, and Harold (sitting) has incredibly bright comb/wattles already

and last but not least, one of the campines, asleep.
Hmmmmm It seems to me that their comb is a little smaller...... Hmmmmm.

I LOVE the Campine color. How is the temperament?
So happy, loves the chicks!
THIS is the cutest chick out of the whole bunch that you hatched. My daughter asks me how long ago I laid her.....
