California - Northern

Deb I think you just cannot tell because you have eleventh billion roosters.

But Orlando is special. I do appreciate he is not a morning Crower.

The broodies bug has struck again. I lost 3 more silkies and dolly. One of the marans is eyeing dolly as a potential co mother.

Dolly is a terrible sitter so I'm just going to give her some chicks. I might give the silkies 1/2 the skovie eggs however they did a good job on what started.

I am waiting for my quail to start crowing. Shouldn't be to much longer, he's 3 old today. I love the sound compared to the 5 roos crows, especially the goose call from the BLRW.

It has cooler down to 85, feels like sweatshirt weather by comparison. The birds are so ready for a cool down, much like their keeper!

Tomorrow we battle the ants that are all over everything. Does anyone have birds that will eat them? Mine just peck then rub their bill on anything they can find.

With my three sisters broody drama, squished chicks and eggs, I moved the mom that hatched the first chicks out of the laying boxes with her two chicks and one of the others who survived two broodies in one box (one chick didn't). One broody gave up and was back on the roost (I swear when I looked up and saw her there I heard her say "don't judge me"

) leaving one broody with a ton of eggs! I took as many eggs as I could fit in the incubator and just laid them in there. I figured after what they'd been through they didn't need any special egg carton set up. I have no idea what stage of gestation since when the broodies took breaks there were 3 hens waiting to lay in the nest! I left the rest with the remaining broodie who does follow the other mom with the chicks around, on and off the nest but in this heat, I think they'd hatch without her!

This morning I hear this peeping and I'm thinking the wild birds are sure singing loud....and then I remember the incubator and sure enough one of the eggs is hatching!

I really didn't have much hope of anything hatching! Came home from work tonight and the little fluffy faced, hairy legged EE was all dry and waiting to get out. I pulled her out, carried her around until dark and went out and slipped her under the broodie with the other three chicks. The broodie wiggled a little and didn't blink an eye!

When I was slipping the chick in I think I heard peeping under the broodie on the eggs, which I'm hoping will hatch her own......darn, I should have given her the chick......aargh, this swapping eggs and chicks is hard to keep track of!

Ewww.....I have some seeping eggs in the incubator right now. Since they're broodies eggs and I don't know the gestation....they could be old by about a week! But after last years broody egg swapping where I accidentally opened an egg with a chick not ready to hatch I'm afraid to remove them! But I should huh.

I know unknown broodies eggs are madness.

Or, the internet says Muscovies will eat ants. One of the reasons people let them go wild in Florida. I just got more eggs today! Mario promises they will eat flies too.

I know regular ducks don't just snails and slugs.
