It has cooler down to 85, feels like sweatshirt weather by comparison. The birds are so ready for a cool down, much like their keeper!

Tomorrow we battle the ants that are all over everything. Does anyone have birds that will eat them? Mine just peck then rub their bill on anything they can find.

I think it would depend on the ant species. I have seen the Australorps eat them but they eat everything and are known to be great foragers.

There used to be ants(Argenine ants) in the side yard but they are gone now that the side yard is the chicken yard.

Jason - I have had 2 wrong way pippers recently. Both hatched on their own and are fine. The last one was under my wellie broody.

It's kind of funny, in years of hatching, I never had any and now I've had 2 of them.

Covies are my least favorite ducks, first time I handled one his toenails raked my arm good! The owner carried him like a turkey, I now know why.

With the mix I've got up here someone usually eats the bugs but not the ants. It is grusome watching them break up the big black millipeds so they can eat them. The OEGB find ghe pill bugs but it's the BSLs that eat them. I've got BSL that hunts for spittle bugs. My BR roo loves slugs but has to wipe his beak on the knee of my jeans.

I need to find a place for Quail.....

I'm waiting for these 19 Bobwhites to mature enough to eat and then I'm planning on getting some cots from Shantih. I love the sounds of the Bobwhites and they are so cute but they are crazy! Also, they need a lot more room than the cots plus they are monogamous so only 1 boy with 1 girl. I definitely don't have enough pen space to do that!

I can't believe it! It was 116 today and a broody hatched a chick tonight at 11 pm. The other 5 eggs still have wiggling chicks too.

OHH! exciting! how goes it??

It's been nice & steady!! I hope the turners worked right! I only lost 9/120!! They were glowing Only 3 of those were from my flock!! Happy ladies? Happy boys!! lol. Day 14- no wiggling yet. Be prepared for me to bug you the next couple of days!! Remember I had too many eggs? I had my friend hatch them. They started yesterday, but out of 56, only 10 have made it, lost one. Just nothing from the others. I'm hoping for more success with my hovabator!! I used linen on the rack instead of paper towels. Send me quail love, Chiqita!!

I do not like wrong end pippers. Often, there is something wrong with them.

I've been working so much and trying to keep the animals cooled off in this heat before and after work that I haven't had time to candle them since I first put them in the incubator. I really need to do it, the poor chick that hatched today did not smell good either. I felt bad it had to stay in there all day! I'll do it first thing in the morning.

I think eggs could hatch on their own in this heat! Congratulations on the new chick and the little wigglers! I felt bad closing the coops up tonight, they're so hot in there. I'm glad we added extra ventilation in the coop that's a building.
