California - Northern

Darn you, Kelly, you had to go and say it. Because I read every post, I become attracted to stuff through repetition and when folks I admire weigh in, I get sucked further into certain endeavors.

I had started ruminating upon non-personalized quail as food; nearly fifty years ago, my grandmother served quail and partridge my uncle and cousin hunted. I liked the flavor and actually remember plucking some when I was ten years old. Wow. My cousin showing me the shot in the meat as he cleaned them. Interesting.

And I loved the flavor at that odd age of "Ewww, that's icky!" responses to this or that food.

Hmmmm. Hmmm. Yeah, I think I want quail too. As another BYCer of note would say, "Craptastic."

Quail are easy! Quail are fast to grow and process! You can come home process a quail and eat it that night!

You can be seranaded by quail in the moonlight!

RUP RUP!!

I'm drowning in quail eggs people !!!

Hey guys! I haven't been on in a few weeks, I got pretty busy...You know, life!
This chick is something like 10 weeks old now(I think that's right...It was hatched on April 26th or 27th)...It's a Silver Laced Polish. Is it old enough to be able to tell the gender yet? What do you guys think, male or female?

Don't mind the purplish coloring...It's been relentlessly picked on by the other chickens for a long time, I have to spray blue kote every day. As long as I spray that stuff on its back every day, they leave it alone. It's feathers on it's back(where it's being picked on) finally were coming back in, then I missed a day of spraying Blue Kote, and it's missing half the feathers there again :(

That is a very nice looking Polish!

I can't tell gender on them but if they were sold as pullets then assume that is what they are. They will be correct 90% of the time.

Since it is cooler today I am baking some Bread!

3 cups of water
1/4 C Peanut oil
1/4 C Honey
1 tbl. Salt
1 tsp malt powder(opt)
Two room temp eggs, slightly beaten.

put salt, oil, honey, malt powder and yeast into bowl. Heat water to 110 and add to bowl. Stir and let sit for 5 min.or so.

slightly beat eggs and add to mixture. Add flour until a stiff dough is formed and kneed until satiny--7 minutes or so. Let dough rise until doubled in a warm place(about an hour).

Punch down and kneed to remove bubbles(actually it is redistributing the yeast--Thank you Alton Brown!) Divide into three parts, shape and put each part into a greased loaf pan. Let rise until doubled(and hour usually)

Bake at 375 until lightly browned and hollow sounding when the bottom is tapped, Approx 20 minutes.

Note: recipe is off of the top of my head--I do not use a recipe for bread.

The Bread is ready!

It wasn't sold as either, I got it as an unsexed chick. It is very pretty! I've been hoping its a female

All this talk of quail almost makes me regret lost opportunities to taste them as a kid. We lived on a few acres east of Fort Bragg. Often bob whites would fly into our picture glass window, usually breaking their cute little necks. My dad loved to eat them so us kids would go collect the little carcass and mom made quick work of pan frying them up. Dad also hunted during quail season and hosted quail feeds. I always held back from eating my little friends.

Installed a 6 nozzle mister system today in our small run. Chooks put off by our test, but they should do fine next 100+ day. We have a timer only allowing a single cycle per day. Based on our test, we probably need capability to run misters several times each hot afternoon rather than one longer session. For those of you valley folk with misting systems, what works best for you?
