California - Northern

They closed the summit going out of south shore. Lots of bummin vacationers , trying to figure out what to do , lined up for miles. How is everyone doing with this new fire?

Earlier today I discovered the resident grey squirrel has one blind eye. It's been fun to watch, but now that I know it's handicapped, I've been feeling sorry for it.

I have suspected it of being an egg thief. Or at least a busy snacker of duck eggs. And some of the Penelopes' eggs laid in various places, like within the "wildlife safety habitat" which most folks would call a pile of tree branches piled up against one of the terrace walls.

However, I encountered the real suspect in my garden tonight: a skunk. It explains why the Penelope who used to settle in a spot on the ground in the garden with her nine chicks has recently taught them to roost on the deck railing at night. She started laying again a few days ago in a special secret spot in the garden, but isn't broody again like her other three sister Penelopes (yet) and still roosts with her growing babies.

Something peripheral moved when I was checking on everybody. It was the skunk, checking out Penelope's nest! It scuttled off - even pushing the garden gate open to exit. Pretty much means it knows the garden well enough to operate the spring-secured, "out only" gate!

I didn't scare it enough to make it discharge, thank Goddess.

Both dogs came out onto the deck a few minutes later (Whatcha up to, Mom?) and they sniffed around very eagerly.

This is not good.

Quail owners... ( not much info on the web) do your quail come back into the coop at dusk or do they lolly gag in the run? And the info for nest boxes for them and nutritional guidelines is not consistent at best. Sounds similar to chickens but skip the meat scraps? Oyster shells? Small ground level nest box? Is it rough (like with chickens) to integrate them with new youngsters?

Deb- your od are sadly out of a pen for now but did you say you have sets of quail?!?

Personal note- the baby shower was a wonderful success. Now to sit back and wait for the baby! IM not the one going into labor but I get the prize grand baby! Yay;-)

Quail have zero home sense. If they are not in a cage they will be snacks for your local wildlife or starve in a couple of days.

They like 20% food when adults and I feed pheasent when they are babies for higher protein and faster smoother growth.

They pay no attention to eggs and lay willy nilly. They nedd bathing boxes and hidy holes to be happy quails however. They dust bath with vigor however so I use a covered dust bath so the sand lasts more then a day or so.

They get crap on their feet so some wire cage are good. But it can hurt their feet if it is all they have so I do 1/2 wire and 1/2 surface.

Think of quails like the chick from clueless. Well meaning and sweet with a little mean girl streak you can distract them from lacking all common sense .

Quote: Woke up at 3AM to smoke and had to close my windows.

Quote: Ditto. I'm trying to picture hidy holes though.

They can't be worse than turkeys?
