Mario just told me buffy passed last night. I guess I'll know more when I get the necro. I'm sad I was not there when she passed.

Rip sweet girl.

my condolences!!

one of my SPPRs has been acting very quiet lately -- she eats and drinks fine, it seems, and will go out for a stroll with the others in the morning, but then retreats to the coop to sit quietly with her eyes closed. i've had them on Corid for the past three days, just in case -- but not sure what else i might do, she's not got any other symptoms? she was probably the most stressed of my flock by the heat last week, so i wonder if she's just not bouncing back from that...?

I know I absolutely cannot do it, I can't even psych myself up for it. The only way I will even be able to raise any type of meat bird is to remove myself from them. I will have to keep them in a pen way far away from the house. Only go out to feed, water and check everyone over for problems. It's sad, but I am too soft. I grew up raising a steer every year for food, eating wild pig and venison.....I still cannot bring myself to do it. Ugh.

I will ask around. We know a bunch of people who process larger animals, so they might know someone who will do chickens.

I had thought of calling Bud's Meats to see if they would process a batch of chickens, since i know they do larger livestock & game animals for people... just haven't tried calling yet, since i don't have any that need to be dispatched soon.

I don't know if you wanted to wait that long for a companion, but I'll probably be going to the Expo this year.

Your friends here in P'ville are probably coming this afternoon for three girls. In fact, I need to go out and snag the campine I have my eye on for them.
I just talked to Susan this morning and she told me that they are going to your place today to pick up chickens! You will like them! We have been friends for over 28 years!

I just finished dispatching a cockerel. Probably put his legs/thighs on to braise this afternoon. He was an OE. Let me see...............purpose of OE, lay olive colored eggs..................roo, hmmm.

Now his purpose is dinner, although I've never seen a fatter bird inside and he was only about six mos old. He must have been a good eater.

I usually try to do three birds at a time, but it's just too hot right now. I needed to have him moved out of the pen he was taking up, so I just did the one and called it good. If I had a little more time, I would have done a few quail at the same time.

Thanks Debi! Ill miss her and I hope she didn't suffer.... On a more cheerful note, It's almost time to think about the Heirloom Expo!!!
Are you planning on staying up there this year? It would be fun if several of us stayed in the same place! I am still voting for the KOA but I think that my friend and her husband are leaning towards a hotel. The KOA is nice because if you like to camp, the price for a tent site isn't that much. Plus, I love having a campfire and the pool is very nice!

All of the OE boys that I have are named Dinner!

There is a campground at the fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. Not as pretty, but convenient if you are planning to spend most of the time at the Expo.

I seriously can't believe that only about 10-11 weeks ago they were little peeping fluff balls! Now they've got all their feathers and they're starting to make clucking sounds. They grow up so fast
