Could you imagine someone walking in on a processing party? LOL!

Lol Depends on which method you use to do the processing.......

My mother tells me horror stories of when she was little and they use to chop the heads off and let them run around. I can't imagine the mess after that. Anyone walking in on that may get the wrong idea for sure.

The cone seems much easier and cleaner to me.

I delivered the first batch of hatching eggs to State Fair yesterday (fair opens tomorrow). There were two eggs pipped when I packed up the eggs for the drive down. When I started to unpack into their incubator, a lakenvelder egg was completely zipped inside the carton. The handful of kids in the building were thrilled when the chick popped out within ten minutes.

I had an audience of everyone that was still around. The youth rabbit show finishes judging today, I think the eggs will put on quite the show for them!

We are working on doing the same up here this year.
If the quail start laying I'll take some in under a broody OEGB, she laid 2 eggs and is now trying to set again! Looks like a BLRW is at it again also. With our day/night temp swing I feel better using hens, Tracy is bringing her incubator.

Off topic but wondering if you have had anyone do Showmanship with a quail? DD wants to give it a try.

Sometimes I am attached but other times not so much.

One of the Bresse Cockerels has attacked me and gives me the "eye". He will not be so hard to process.
My Bresse roo is turning out to be way too protective of his girls & pen. DH loves him but he has gone for me twice and bit & clamped on to my friend's 11 yr old son's arm. He didn't break skin but Ben said that it hurt. Ben takes care of the chickens for me so I sure want to keep him happy & not afraid to go into the pen. Chauvelin doesn't know that I have about a dozen of his sons in my brooder pens and one of them is looking really nice. If he gets any more aggressive or this little boy ends up being a bigger, nicer looking roo, Chau Chau will be taking the short walk to the end of the cone!

My DH tells the same stories. They thought that it was funny. He's from a family of 4 boys who hunted, fished, raised farm animals for meat, etc. We use a cone for processing and I wouldn't consider any other way.

I can't imagine how it would work during the walking portion of showmanship. I can't imagine a quail reacting favorably to the show stick. It would have to be REALLY tame. My son was the only one that ever used a LF bird, a HUGE RIR cock. The judges would even comment on it.

I do remember seeing a boy use a Cayuga drake once, it didn't go well.

I still press my nose to the glass for each and every one.

That's why I like processing with my friend who has the farm in Brentwood. Her husband does all of the killing and they have a plucker machine. It is also more "fun" to do it as a group. The last processing day we had, we were able to do 42 chickens and 1 big old Tom turkey. We started at around 9 in the morning and were finished by 1. Many hands make light the labor!

Well with that much productivity and friendly encouragement it would be worth it. Even if I did barf into a garbage can. Soooo... Who is planning and hosting the event;-)

That's really good! It took me 2 hours start to finish to do 3 cockerels.

That creeped him out. All but one have gone smoothly, and was a clean kill. (even the one that crowed)
