He is so cute! Sorry to hear that you have to get rid of him but I know how it is. we too cn't have roo's either and I have to young guns almost ready to Roar soon and they are heading back tomorrow to the guy we got them from...

One of my Black and Blue Australorps is starting to crow. It is very funny sounding--Kind of a cross between a chicken crow and a Duck honk.
The will be off to the Egg farm soon.
It was nice meeting you today Jason, and your two children.
Although it was small, I managed to sell ALL my chicks
I was selling them at give-away prices anyway so now I don't have to feed them. 26 less mouths to feed!
Although... I did bring two birds back home - they weren't my chicks...
I now have two female muscovy ducks
Just can't pass up a good Blue... and she needed a friend (Black Pied).
Ah well.. it did say "trade".. so I traded the money I got from selling the chicks for the ducks! HAH!

My rooster -Melvin- finally started a full (but pretty quiet) crow a couple weeks ago. I've been keeping him in a dog crate in the garage at night. I let him out about 9AM or so. It hasn't been a problem. He rarely crows during the day. I really like him though, He is so weird and funny. Always finding food for the girls, and doing his crazy dances. He's even nice to the older chicks.
i took a LOT of update photos of my grow-out chicks today -- i won't post them ALL here, but here's a smattering:
queenie, the 11 week old silver duckwing araucana (i didn't end up keeping either of her brothers, who were different colors)
harold, my very sweet (so far) CL cockerel, 10 weeks old -- although i gave his sister away to a friend, she had a larger crest that i prefer, plus was a bit of a meanie -- i'm not totally sure i'll keep harold, but so far he's such a charmer, i might have to!
blue the isbar boy, also 10 weeks -- i have a feeling he's going to be gorgeous
jack the 8-week-old birchen marans boy -- also destined to be rather gorgeous, and has HUGE feet
a detail of jack's feathers, i love that green-plus-dark-blue sheen he has already!
maria, jack's sister -- she is the most elusive of all my grow-out chicks, this was the best photo i could manage
molly the isbar, named for our very own Miss Molly, from whom i got all my isbar eggs/chicks
fern, one of the isbar/blue marans crosses i got from Miss Molly
mabel in front, i'm not sure if she's a pure isbar or an isbar/marans cross, but leaning toward the latter -- the splash is frieda, definitely a cross
little penelope stretching, she's a pure isbar, and that's mabel in front
and astrid the SFH, in quite the yoga position!

i have NO idea -- i have enough trouble keeping up with the eggs from the 11 layers (well, minus two broodies right now) that i have currently! but perhaps i can swap or sell some more with people from school -- and i have a vague idea of trying to breed the campines and/or the isbars -- maybe even some marans... who knows! i've come a long way in just a year of keeping chickens!
