news from the hatching: interesting that both broodies seem to be having exactly parallel hatches, with three unhatched eggs (so far, no pips -- i've moved them all to underneath the "new" broodies to see if anything more happens), one strong active chick, and one weaker chick that doesn't seem to follow mama, just sits still and cries if left alone. absolutely identical hatches!

i've given all the chicks Poly-Vi-Sol drops (which seemed to have an almost immediate improvement on the weaker chicks), and there's Save-A-Chick electrolytes in their water for when they start drinking. hopefully all four will become healthy little chicks, and i suppose i don't really need more than 4 anyway (since i have two silver campine pullets already, that are older).

i may have typed too soon! i went back out to see how they were doing, and one mama was, um, standing on her weaker chick my accident. at first it wasn't moving at all & i was afraid it was dead already, but slowly in my warm hand it revived -- so i brought it indoors and put it under my brand-new, still-in-the-box EcoGlow to warm up. it's standing on its own now (although unsteadily) and cheeping periodically (less so as it gets warmer) -- hoping it will revive enough to return to its mom this evening once she settles down for the night, & hoping the vitamins will have helped enough by morning that it will be stronger.

drama! and so glad the ecoglow didn't take long to get set up!

thank you! i've given the chick a few tiny sips of electrolyte water, and will give some more in a few minutes, after it can warm up a little more under the heater. and more vitamins before it goes back to mama.

so glad i arrived when i did! i don't know that it would have survived much longer, she seemed to have her full weight on it, and it was completely limp when i first picked it up, like its back had been broken.

I have ten Brahma chicks. They sleep in a bird cage at night. I cover it with a towel. During the day they are outside in a large wooden box with open bottom so they have access to grass and things. The top is removable and has chicken wire. My dad suggested I leave them outside to sleep in the big box. Personally I think they are to small. Any opinions? The chicks are about two weeks old. I'm in the valley so it does get hot during the day.

It gets down to 55 sometimes at night in the valley. Do they have heat now?

They will probably need a small light outside to keep them warm.

No they don't have a light. something I regret not buying when I had the chance. My dad says they will be fine. I disagree. They are hatchery chicks so there is no hen to cover them.
