California - Northern

Hi everyone! I'm trying to catch up on all the cute chick and baby pics.

I am wondering if there are any people that sell day-old flowerhen chicks in the northern california area (silkies went broody again...)

Cheers,

Christina

I was going to say Deann at Just Struttin Farm, but i think a) she's turned her incubators off for a break, and b) she might not be continuing to raise SFHs? still, couldn't hurt to check with her:

Send a pm to papabrooder--He is in Redding and has Swedish Flower Hens.

I do herby promise to raise my grandson , James Russell Anderson , Born Sunday morning at 5:22 AM 7 lbs. 13 oz. 21 3/4 inches , To love raise and participate in chicken math for all of his years.

Congratulations! Enjoy him and your new life as a grandmother.

Deb, sorry I missed the show. Congrats to you on your win. Was that the male I liked at Red Bluff?

OK got skunked again. This time with sadder results. He snuck onto the covers porch via an open door ( mistake) and grabbed snickerdoodles and her baby. It was sad and our own fault.

Deb I will be emailing you about catching skunk tips. Trap is baited I will be rubbing it with bacon breese today. Hopefully it won't catch the dog while I'm away onsite till Saturday. Mario might leave him in there!
I'm sorry.

oh, i missed this earlier -- so sorry! those critters can be sneaky...

Both pappa and Deanne have turned the incubators off iirc.

They should have eggs.

All I have upcoming is breese and silkies/ showgirls. I'm not off but have stopped putting eggs in so I can see it!

Please keep a good thought/say a prayer for my daughter Erin today as she flies off to horse world. I am freaking out a bit and will be until I know that she has landed in NJ been picked up by a nice person and then taken to her new home. Then I will freak out about a whole bunch of other things I am sure but for today if you all kept the "Safe Travels and Happy Landings" mojo going for her I will be so grateful.

GallusGirl feels good to land a good home for a roo doesn't it. Congratulations.

Anyone have a small Serama hen? I don't know how a pair will do. Butters seems very lonely with just snicker daddy.
Sorry for your loss. I have birds in 2 areas that a skunk could get into if I don't get the doors latched at night. Can't even guess the number of times I've gotten up in the middle of the night to check them. I've lucked out a couple of times when the doors didn't latch completely and discovered it in the morning.

ok, so this apparently is what happens when you keep two chicks inside the henhouse for two days with not only their own broody mom (a light sussex), but also a broody sitting on eggs (an SPPR):

they sit on their Aunt Frances' back! (the smaller chick is behind the bigger one) -- when i took this, their mom Jane had already taken off through the pop door to the floor of the run, and the babies didn't follow -- stayed with Fran, where they clearly feel safe and warm, but cried for their mom.

once i picked them up & put them down in the run with their mom, they ran around with her (although the smaller/weaker chick is still not so good at keeping up with her) and stopped crying.

so, they have a built-in babysitter! thankfully Frances doesn't seem perturbed by them either being IN her nest, or by NOT being there -- she's in a zen kind of mood with her eggs...

and finally, dixie and her one remaining chick are doing great -- she has it outside the coop this morning, so she can take a dust bath & explore around a little:

Not sure if anyone else has the Today Show on but the bird on the set is driving me nuts. I spent 10 minutes earlier trying to find it in the garage, porch, etc. Didn't figure it out until I hit mute on the tv for the third time.
