I'm curious too! I've read some people are doing earthworms too!
They are fascinating and gross at the same time. I am not a bug person but the chickens just love them. This is the absolute cheapest way to supply this protein source/treat. The pet stores charge a fortune for them and as long as you do the minimum required you can get these treats pretty cheaply.

Some people actually touch them, and do all this sorting and organizing. I don't bother. I just follow a fellow BYC members way of doing it and it is easy.

It is actually under the learning section under Meal Worms. I follow Gallo's method.

It is dried cat food and I kind of like the smell of it. I keep it in the garage in a lidded garbage can and toss it out as scratch, a couple of cups full each evening. It is a great distraction too--Gets me to the nest box area without stepping on them. Silly chickens!

It is hard to find animal protein for them in quantities that work for my 6 chickens(Chicken math). I use Ultra Kibble too. If I had them in a pasture I would not worry about animal protein so much.
Ohhhh hard food isn't so bad. That wet food is just not right.

I started my meal worm colony in January when it was colder so they were less active, and now I have so many I have to do something about it.

We love her to bits but maybe we should rehome her for her own good? The rooster is my MILs and we like him too! LOL
I so don't have enough experience with chickens to even offer an opinion, but it seems really strange. She must be at the bottom of the pecking order? I am wondering if you got rid of her if he would do that to the next one that ends up at the bottom? I am just guessing. Maybe she isn't at the bottom?

You know there are times in life when I react that way with people. I just don't like them from the moment I meet them and the sound of their voice grates on my nerves. Maybe it is the same in the chicken world.

Unfortunately I can't act on my impulses like chickens can.......

just a small update: Jane the light sussex and her two campine chicks have been out again this afternoon, and they seem to finally be getting the hang out it. the smaller one is easily distracted by patches of sunlight, it LOVES to warm up -- but it seems to make ALL the difference that it's 70° out instead of 55°! (no heat wave here!)

and Frances the SPPR broody that been playing "auntie" came out for a stretch at the same time as Jane & chicks -- but after a snack and some water, went right back to her eggs. no bonding with her babysitting charges!

So Auntie Frances can babysit in the morning and off the kids go in the afternoon with their mom Jane. Best of both worlds!

exactly! and hopefully in a few days they'll be strong enough that they won't need quite so much attending-to!

thanks to you and Ron for your perspectives this morning, it helped me to figure it out...

Your Welcome!

I hope the little chick makes it!

My Layers were back to normal today. No eggs on the ground and they were their normal selves. Maybe it was the smoke from the fire yesterday?
