See, I told you that you should keep a rooster and breed some pure Silvers

This post is scary tempting.

How long has she been laying? After they get the hang of it so to speak they are as dark as they will ever be. After that they get lighter.

It only has to be a 4 or higher to be a marans. If it does not lay a 4 it is not considered a marans and I'd sell it. People usually are not happy with under 5 if you are selling eggs unless the girls have been laying all year.
Well it's probably just about a four. She's still laying a pullet size egg but has been laying speratically for about a month. Thanks

Hey I have a broody marans that quite a good mother if anyone needs a broody for some chicks. She stole eggs from poor Josephine and in the scramble I'm not sure if any will be viable.

The first couple of eggs often have extra bloom on them. Is the egg darker when it is wet?

Regardless of the darkness, Marans eggs are often big beautiful eggs so you might want to keep her but not breed her unless the eggs she lays darken up over this week. The color will lighten until a molt and will darken again and be a bit bigger when the hen starts laying again.(They usually stop laying during a molt).

I was wondering how the weaker one was doing, so glad its catching up to the rest!

Broodies are fun, I have .. um.. 4? One Blue Silkie sharing with my Black Sumatra (talk about opposites) and two Sillies in the Sillie coop. I just decided they could keep the eggs and moved the ones laying out of the coop to another coop (they aren't happy but oh well) and any that they laid before they settle in they can hatch. The Silkie with the Sumatra has already quit laying, so that's good (she is seriously HQ much worse than PQ).
I'm so excited!!! I've been randomly putting some eggs from my chickens in the 'bator to see if any were fertile. I checked some of them last night, and they are developing!!

Looks like I might get some chicks from Princess Celestia and Melvin.

I kept meaning to say they make a lovely couple, will be really interesting to see how the chicks come out!
