Do you have enough Basque to breed them next year?
I have 7 older ones. 3 males The best looking boy has become a biter-have to grab his comb and pull him off my arm or hand. He has yellowish legs and not nearly as gray on the chest as #2. #1 also has a huge comb. Temperament on 2 is much better but white legs, low tail carriage, much more gray and a strange blade on his comb. #3 is a sweetie but he is almost solid gray on chest, comb is lopping over, his red is to bright, white feathers on his ears but he is huge. Like handling a young turkey I would guess.

3 of the 4 girls are showing the Millie white feathers. The 4th girl is like the sweet boy-huge and much richer colors, right down to the white ear feathers.

How was the Heirloom festival today Santa Rosa Today?

Notice I have the correct name this year. I do not know why I want to call it an Heritage Festival....

It was great!!

Learned alot from Walt who demonstrated what to look for in SOP Delawares. Super informative. UC Davis also had a couple lectures on bio security and health issue. Really Scary.

Turkeys are like dogs that don't bite! They are very pet like. Haven't you ever seen a dog and a pillow?

Your turkey is Much larger than most dogs. I was very concerned that he liked me!!! Impressive beasty.

OK someone else needs hardwire cloth. Where was the link for the best place to get it online?

I gathered earlier that stucco wire from the Home Depot was the way to go?

My gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about all the losses Chiquta but am glad to hear that some are slowly staggering home. I lost all my flock (except my roo, Big Daddy) a couple of years ago. All 35 were in a pile inside the run and my rooster was out. As I walked up to the coop, Big Daddy came rung down to me...I was trying to figure out if I had missed locking him in the night before and then notice how quiet it was....not even the horses were making noise. I'll never forget the site of all my girls and baby chicks piled up like that. I've rarely named a chicken since. My heart goes out to you. I hope everyone is safe from the fire near the Redding, it sounds pretty nasty and fast growing. Is it wrong to be happy someone is up posting this late? Its usually just me, here by myself! Insomnia Queen! I took a sleeping pill 2 hours ago and I'm not even beginning to feel sleepy! Although I've posted more then one Ambien post over the years! :0 Ali, congrats on the new house! How exiting for you! Linda, love the new farms name and congrats on the ability to have roosters again. I know how much you love the boys! If you're looking for BCM, I have some beautiful boys from very dark eggs. Speaking of roosters, I have a question....I have a beatiful OE cockerel. He's blue like my OE pullet from the same hatch (Blue Copper Marans/Ameraucana). Since the OE's beautiful olive egg doesn't get passed on then what is the benefit to having an OE roo? Gosh I've missed everyone. I'm having girl stuff surgery next week so I'll be moving into this thread for my recovery! Be forewarned!
What was it that did that got your chickens a while back? Did you ever find out?
I didn't! Talked to the county trapper and others who shared which animals kill for sport, but those don't pile...others that may kill for sport or kill a large amount while teaching their young to hunt, wouldn't usually kill more then seven. We don't have dogs running around here and we never caught anything in the trap! I've always worried it was human but were not exactly where you could see us.
So after almost 20 weeks Curly died last night. I put him in his nest box last night after he spent the afternoon/evening in the tractor and noticed that he was pretty mellow. He usually flaps a bit when I pick him up. Anyway didn't really think anything of it and then this morning he was gone. Wanted to thank you all for your advice when he was tiny. For anyone who doesn't remember or who wasn't around last spring: I assisted his hatch and could see at the time that he was compromised but started feeding him and bracing his legs/making shoes for him and he made it. As time went on one of his legs regressed and became so deformed he couldn't straighten it; the other one had curled toes so he spent a lot of time just hanging out but he could move around well enough to get his own food and water and he seemed content. Anyway I wouldn't do it again but I am glad I did it for him. He became a frequent guest at outdoor barbeques and just this weekend was hanging out with me in the kitchen, eating watermelon and scrambled eggs while I made dinner for the humans. He ended up being really pretty, creamy white with red/golden lacing. As Tom said, he had some chicken happiness which is more than he would have had if I hadn't had you guys to help me save him. So thanks!
Ours was Missy.....any leg issues that don't fix in 36 hours goes. I'm sorry you lost Curly. He was happy you gave him some time.
Trap set four nights in a row equals raccoon, raccoon, opossum, raccoon:ya What will it be tonight? Let's just hope it's not a skunk. :sick
That's what we've been catching! And then we forgot to close up the coops last night! Was so relieved to find them safe and sound in the morning!

It really is getting to be predator central. Last night the neighbor across the street called to warn he had seen a mountain lion stroll through his yard the evening before!

No more late night trips out to the chickens for me, flashlight in hand. They are on their own. Or all least I'll have the four dogs along with me, the great dane in particular. Not that they could protect me, but at least they'd have a better chance of knowing we weren't alone.

I know someone who has a cougar dog. As soon as the dog gets the scent it turns and runs straight to the house. At least they know when one has or is around.
