California - Northern

up again here, Daisy Jr. is bouncing around in the incubator among the not-doing-anything eggs, the ONE and only pipped isbar egg hasn't made much progress outwardly from last night, but is definitely still moving around a lot inside the egg. continuing to watch & hope that it can figure out how to get unzipped!

Good morning! Yeah for Daisy Jr.! Go, little Isbar chick, go!!!

Mass reply time!
To Happy Chooks: What hens do you have? I recall you being pretty far north of here, but I'm sure it'd be worth it!
To debs_flock: What sort of hens do you think you could pull together? I'd love to show up at my friend's door with a little variety-pack of hens, and I know you have some fancy stuff!
To capayvalleychick: Your Dorkings are beautiful! So fluffy! When will you next be in Davis? Also which feed store do you use? I always just drop by Western...they have big bags of King which my hens seem almost TOO fond of. They're little piggies.
What age are you looking for?

For adults - I have a welsummer - she is a great layer but a bit worn from having a bunch of roosters right now.

For juveniles - I have a black barnevelder from a blue mating and a mixed breed (barnevelder over Olive egger hen) - no idea what color she will lay, she has no beard, and a pseudo pea comb.

home again! and Daisy Jr #2 (a sibling hatched several weeks ago) has hatched!!!!

quite loud and healthy-sounding!

but the isbar eggs are quiet in contrast -- still just the one pip, and it's progressed a teeny bit to actually having what looks like a hole in both membranes, but that's all -- and none of the other 11 eggs show so much as a crack. here's the one, i can see movement inside so it's still working:

hoping hoping hoping to at least manage to hatch two chicks, the one Daisy Jr. would be lonesome all by itself!
Congrats! Isbars are lazy hatchers so don't worry yet.

Our coop is almost completely finished! I mean, it was 90% done when they moved into it at a couple months old or so, but we didn't put in the nest boxes until yesterday. We are doing a communal nest box but if they don't like it, I can easily put in dividers. It hangs off the back of the coop...Now we just need to add trim and paint it all.

I have 7 hens, but the coop is built for 8. I'm planning on selling a couple of my hens and hatching out babies in the spring, if I get a broody hen(I have Andalusians, Light Brahmas, and Speckled Sussex)

But what do I use as bedding inside the nest box? What do you guys prefer?
I use shavings.

"It's behind me, isn't it?"

"It's got my ear, it's got my ear!!"

That is hilarious!

I could probably come up with spares in - golden campine, RIR, BC marans, lakenvelder, Iowa blues, new Hampshire, silver pencil rocks, white legbar and in bantams barred rocks & Columbian cochin.

Maybe something else, I'd have to look around the pens.

lazy hatchers! this one that's pipped is making slow but steady progress, the hole is now a teeny bit bigger than when i first turned on the light this morning -- but now i have to go to work, argh!! at least i can come home this afternoon after class...

and re: the ones that haven't pipped at all, should i be patient with them as well? (i suppose, nothing to lose by leaving them incubating for a few more days, just in case...)

After you the Isbar is out, check for stinky eggs and toss those. Leave the rest for a couple of days because of the incubator problems at the start of incubation.

Congratulations on getting some to hatch!
