California - Northern

Got a call from my real estate broker: "Come get the keys - escrow closed and recorded today. It's yours, now."

I am heading out the door NOW.

Congratulations Linda!

How long do you let shipped eggs sit before putting them in the incubator?

I make sure they are room temp and then toss them in the incubator, big end up. I make sure the incubator is stable for temp and humidity and leave the turner off for one to three days(depends on air cell condition).

Time from being collected to start of incubation seems more important than letting them rest for shipped eggs.

Thank you. I was thinking the same thing because they took 5 days to get here :(

OK hatching experts. I just got 6 dz eggs with the worlds smallest air cells. I'm worried I'm going to have drowned chicks!

Besides normal high and dry any other tips? I weighed about 1.5 dz so I can watch that way too.

You can stick food coloring up their vent to tell who is laying. Knowledge can be yours.
not THAT obsessed with finding out who is doing it

My Icelandics are already super skittish so I think we would never be friends if I subjected them to that.

35% seems to work well for humidity.

I do not worry about drowned chicks. At lockdown, draw a line around the air cell. Watch the pip and if it is below the line make sure the chick can still breath.

If you just received them with teeny air cells then I think that is good news. I found the freshest eggs had the smallest air cells - first day was teeny! If they are loosing moisture at the proper rate I would incubate them like regular.

Yay for houses closing, and chicks hatching!

We slipped 6 Bresse, and 2 FBCM eggs under our broody last Wednesday evening. So far she is dedicated, and things are going smoothly.

I would really like to candle them to show my daughter. We are going to build a candler. I am going to have her keep a journal as a science project. What should we be seeing at this stage?

Veins and sometimes a moving spot where the veins meet.

Congrats!
