California - Northern

Quote: Get yourself an incubator and I think you can get all of those breeds from people here in Northern CA. Most of those breeds Deb has, Papa Brooder in Redding has beautiful Speckled Sussex (don't know about the brahma), I have welsummers. The only one that will be tough locally is the Silkied Ameraucana's - I haven't heard of anyone local that has them.

Have heard English orrphingtons are less broody anyone know if that is true?
My 1 remaining English Orp went broody this year at 3 years old. She had never been broody before. She was a nightmare of a broody, crushing eggs and refusing to adopt chicks until she decided they were okay to mother when they were 4 weeks old. She sat most of the summer.

Got a call from my real estate broker: "Come get the keys - escrow closed and recorded today. It's yours, now."

I am heading out the door NOW.

Congrats Linda!

How long do you let shipped eggs sit before putting them in the incubator?

AmyPaperLady,
Chicken math has struck already? I count 14 breeds. You need not worry about infecting the rest of us here, we're past that point.

Buff Brahma

Orp (color not decided)*
BLRW*
Maran (color not decided)
Welsummer
Easter Egger*
Silkied Ameracauna, splash (read the whole thread, know I can't have a rooster so can't help breed, and by the time people are culling for type I'll probably be full, but still...)

Hey I have some of your *ed breeds. No Orps, Leghorns or BLRW but the rest. I really like what you have listed. I hope to hatch Dark Brahama in 2014.

So sorry to those of you who lost chickens last night.

We spent 3 days in the Petaluma/Santa Rosa area and I was concerned about my chickens. My 22 yr old son was staying at our house in exchange for chicken duties. I called him every morning to remind him to get up and let the chickens out. And I had my adult daughter come over in the evening to make sure the coops were closed up. All chickens survived!

Sandy, Monet and I missed you at the Expo! We stayed with friends in a larger cabin at the KOA. It was not as nice as the one we stayed in last year. Monet and I are hoping to tent camp next year like we did 2 years ago. I would love to meet you for lunch if we can coordinate our schedules!

Well, let's see what we can do!! Let's PM!! :)

Two eggs 4 yolks!

Crummy pic but I was so surprised this morning when I cracked my first two white pullet eggs and both were double yolked! That makes me think that yesterday's egg was also the Dorkish/Porking girl's but was a single yolker and that is why it is so much smaller...esp after Deb and Happy Chooks' post/pics...mystery solved no food color enema required.

Ha ha I love you double yolks! I have been tempted to try the food color trick again, I tried it and it didn't work. Maybe I didn't do it right? Anyhow, I want to see which of my Marans are laying which eggs, But it probably would not work on the dark eggs.

Could you explain what the food color trick is?

The new house key call is one of the best! We got our keys April 2012.

If I couldn't talk my husband into a quick brooder, I doubt an incubator is in the cards--especially with the wait involved. Plus roosters. Intellectually, I can say freezer camp, but I don't know if I could send anyone there, if homes couldn't be found.

I'm counting on zoning to help keep chicken math under control, even though I can't have one of everything on my list.

Chicken research makes a great procrastination excuse
