Could you explain what the food color trick is?

food color is applied to the hens vent. The egg she lays will have the color on it.

The problem is that the food coloring dye has to be applied fairly close to when the egg is laid. It does not often work.

Trap Nesting is the best way. The hen goes in and is locked into the nest. Someone needs to let them out though....

Sounds simple enough but I see me wearing the food coloring instead. I'm happy just collecting what ever is laid.

400
boys, girls or pair? About 5 weeks.

They are olandsk dwarf. The dark in front is heavier and we (you and I) predicted boy when hatched ... But no comb development has me confused...
They look like they have a flat type of comb. Those are very hard to figure out.

Well never mind about the flat comb! and the colors do not count.

I still stick by my prediction though.....I just have this feeling about them.

OK not to burst your bubble but most of those breeds will only be available as straight run as chicks. The only place you will get reliable sexing is a hatchery ( and even that's gone down hill) and most of those breeds won't be available from a hatchery.

Last I checked vent sexers get six figures so only big hatcheries employ them. If you want those breeds you are going to have to find breeders who are selling older birds ( not cheap) deal with roosters or get very very lucky. All those things are possible but not all probabl.
The new house key call is one of the best! We got our keys April 2012.

If I couldn't talk my husband into a quick brooder, I doubt an incubator is in the cards--especially with the wait involved. Plus roosters. Intellectually, I can say freezer camp, but I don't know if I could send anyone there, if homes couldn't be found.

I'm counting on zoning to help keep chicken math under control, even though I can't have one of everything on my list.

Chicken research makes a great procrastination excuse ;)
