Let me check to see.  I believe they are still laying, but DH has been doing all the egg collecting.  We haven't been marking anything because I was resisting setting any eggs right now.

I do have eggs, LOTS.  Unfortunately I'm on my way out of town tomorrow and won't be back for two weeks.  When I do get back, I'll be home for three weeks, then heading out again for another two.

On chicks, I do plan to hatch some chicks during the window I'm home.  I have lots of people looking for Iowa Blue chicks because of the recent article in the poultry magazine featuring them.  I could put in some other eggs to hatch, but they have to go in tonight, I'm leaving in the morning.  I'll get home just in time to lock them down.

Ok. Thank you! I can come get them today if that works.

Do you have Lavander Orps? If so I'd like a couple of those eggs if you have them also.

Anyone know anything about Splash Marans?

You would get them if you bred Blues.

A lot of Blue Marans are based on cuckoo Marans--they are almost all from Hatcheries and do not lay the darkest eggs. They do lay a lot of nice big eggs, 5 on the Marans scale though.

Of course Deb likely has ones based on French Black Copper Marans that lay the darkest eggs on the planet.....

So, In the Marans egg color continuum, can you give me an idea where breeder quality cuckoos fall? Also are there discernible personality differences between colors?

The FBCM(French Black Copper Marans) have the darkest--8 plus on the scale.

There is a new line now--little Pedlar that is quite rare and expensive. Birchen Marans can have dark eggs too.

Deb, Sunny Dawn and Pam in Paradise are working on getting the darkest color so if you want Very Dark Marans eggs, check with them.

I have a Blue Marans that is based on Cuckoo Marans--She is very friendly and very smart. She is 2.5 years old, molting and still laying an egg 4 or so times a week.

Not to make you choose anything, but breese are wonderful elegant birds that are great layers who mature fast! you can just also eat them. They are not a meat bird in the traditional sense. ( fat and messy with no personality and no movement)

The longer I have them, they more I like them, so I'm bias :)

I totally agree. My original plan was to hatch chciks and only keep 1-2 girls for my layer flock. But I am so smitten with them I am gonna keep em all (3 boys 7 girls) LOL. Great birds, lots of personality. I love their expression. Mine are still young. Looking forward to their eggs.

Can you send me a pic of her egg? Also forgive my ignorance but when you say "Blue" is she all blue or blue copper?

And didn't someone on this thread...Deann maybe?? end up with Little Peddlar eggs?
