California - Northern

My BLRW's are broody. 1 is on her third set of chicks and her sister shared duties with the second hatch. I have a pullet from them that at 7 months is broody after laying for less than a month.

ETA. We have 2 SLWB's that are 3 now and have never been interested in sitting. They are hatchery stock if that makes a difference.

He is growing so fast! I keep going back and forth between getting a kitty and not. I had four at one time a long time ago and they have all passed on. But the litter box stinks usually. However, with the Sweet PDZ it might not be so bad now.

Okay the post didn't show up, but I wanted to say that I have always wanted a SLW. They are so pretty. Are they another broody breed? I think I have my quota of broody breeds.

I got mine delivered from there on Friday, but I don't have a John the Contractor. Does John the Contractor travel? I would assume not because I think you are pretty far from me.

you never know he may travel but you probably have to figure some travel costs.

Lewey is getting huge

My Black Penedesenca Pullet laid her firs egg today!

Jason, it is a nice dark color too

The first egg is from a Marans x EE(Chiquita), Then Black Pene and finally, for Tommys girl, an SG Dorking egg.

The few SLW hens I have had, and the one I have now, have never gone broody. Neither has the GLW hen in my flock.

Slw= silver laced wayondotte (spelling?!?)

We had one from the hatchery go broody and she was the scariest to collect the eggs from . You had to grab her head with one hand and cover her eyes and snatch the eggs with the other. We didnt think of that great "chucker" dog toy idea mentioned earlier!

what beautiful eggs!!

gave my flock a rare outing this afternoon -- no bobcat visitors, hurrah, although lots of vultures wheeling, which had the chickens jumpy -- probably a good thing that they're on the alert!

and changes are happening in the flock -- formerly-broody Jane the light sussex is once again following Max the rooster around, and tonight is transitioning back into the main layer flock pen -- her two campine chicks are sad without her, but they're about 7 or 8 weeks now, and are just going to have to deal with it -- plus they still have their "aunt" Frances in their pen looking after her two marans chicks. the "mutt" chicks in the layer pen are looking like 3 boys and 3 girls, although one of the girls is still a maybe in my book.

and in the teenagers' pen, both Jack (birchen marans, HUGE) and Harold (CL, huge comb) are crowing with increasing coordination (no longer like a kazoo chorus, although they still don't have their sound down), and i saw Harold attempting to mount two of the girls in that flock this afternoon -- they both squawked with disapproval, but the two campine pullets' combs are getting larger & redder, they might be approaching point of lay? everyone's growing up! and several of them flew up into one of the oak trees, to try that on for size -- came back down pretty quickly, but especially Blue the isbar + the two marans/isbar crosses, and the campines, are pretty good fliers.

no photos, except one of miss pearly having a lazy afternoon nap:

I got my first golden cuckoo Marans egg today!
