California - Northern

I candled. It's day 5. If there is no veining by day 5 is there a chance for anything to develop at all?

Day 5 is a bit early. Give them until at least day 14. The Darker the egg and or the thicker the shell the less you will see inside the egg. The darkest eggs will never let you see the veins.

They're easy to see through. Just regular color brown egg shells. So there's a chance?

Yes! There is nothing to see inside an egg at all until day 2. You often do not see any veins on day 5. Day 7 you will see a bunch.

Hatching egg should not be touched until day 7. They are the most fragile during the first week.

I got my first golden cuckoo Marans egg today!

Look at the size of that beautiful chocolate egg! And on top of that . . I have hatching eggs coming from Catdance Silkies on Wednesday!

How funny we were just talking about your GCM not laying yet and here it is! Good luck with the Silkie egg
Ron, that pen egg is gorgeous! The color is so different from marans. I really like the matte look instead of the shine like the marans eggs have

congrats

Ron Thanks for posting that pic with the SGD egg It was like a little shout out to my girl Petunia. Hers are getting a little bigger and since last Tuesday she has laid one every day but they definitely look like the one one your pic My California Grey laid last Sunday and zippo from her since. Hoping she gets with the program this week but really want to see some color in the nest box this week. How old were all the Amelias on this thread when they started laying? Mine is just 20 weeks with an enormous floppy and very pink comb.

Ali...maybe it is the "hybrid vigor" but my polish cross is the the one that has laid a ping pong ball every day since Tuesday. Polish are all over the charts with their laying rates so maybe your girls will surprise you.

The Amelias started laying eggs at 20 to 22 weeks old.

My Broody Amelia finally got off of the nest! Now she is molting though.

Lazy morning - my excuse, catching up on BYC

Welcome to all new to this thread. Love seeing all the egg, chick, and kitty pics. Congrats to all with first eggs. Only my bantam Cochin is laying. Perfect light brown eggs. My bigger two, Norwegian Jaerhon and Cream Legbar, are healthy and happy to let the little one do all the work. Our lunch today will be our first batch of eggs - I've collected 10 and figure that will be generous for the two of us. Yum! Wishing everyone a lovely day.

So I am still wondering how do you pronounce "Cochin" Is it Co Chin, Co Shin, Co Cheen, or some other way? I still have to say "Pen in duh sinka" to myself

Deb, a guy named John Moorehead may be contacting you re Icelandics. I gave him my two boys and he likes them and thinks he would like to work with them. I gave him your BYC user name.

I think my Icelandics are cool looking but am not such a big fan of their personalities. I may sell him my two girls unless starting to lay makes them more tractable. Maybe I am overly demanding or perhaps insecure

but I would rather have girls whose interactions with me weren't limited to attempting to run away. Even Willa my OE who was so skittish for so long will now eat from my hand and peck at my toenails but both Rue and Hattie stay on the outside of the hen circle and don't come forward at all when I am giving them treats. Not deciding on their fate till spring but I would rather get my white eggs from more California Greys and Dorkings. Those girls are sweet hearts.

WOW!

Now I really can't wait for Ellie and Hershey to lay their first eggs! I love the brown and blue. And I just realized if I mate Emmet with Hershey I'll get OE's..... bloody chicken math!

Chickee that is a great first egg! Perfect color for hatching ( not so dark they are a big pita to get chicks from) and so even! If you want to breed your silkies make sure to get cat dance pen codes. You need to know the genetics of the color as well as what it looks like. Especially if you get light blues self blues splash or porcelain. You won't always be able to visually tell a difference between them but you'll need to know with you've got.

I've got 80 of her eggs in the smoker bator right now ( not mine) and I recognized 2 of the codes.....

The silkies I'm hatching right now are the best i've ever had. Its bittersweet. It looks like we had finally worked out the kinks in my breeding program when everything ended. At least i know I can work things out.

I am happy with the even color on that Marans egg! Hope the other 5 hens lay as nice an egg.

80 eggs!!

I was worried about 24+ !!

Knowing those codes would be very helpful! Especially since my favorite colors are porcelain, lavender and buff.
