Ok, one is out of shell. She kicked it out of the nest, I tried to put it back, but she picked it p by the foot and kicked it back out.. I don't have a heat lamp,, so kept it in my shirt until I could fill a hot water bottle with hot water and put it in a very small box to keep it warm. I can't leave until later to get a heat lamp. Is there a better way to keep warm until then?

It seems quite healthy with nothing wrong with it. I will know more once it is dry

all it needs is a 70-100 watt bulb. A desk lamp will do as will a table lamp if you can rig it to hang up side down. The lamp portion should be out of the brooder with only the light portion shining in to keep the baby warm Good Luck Mossy Oak!

Also a fuzzy sock filled with rice and microwaved for a couple of minutes is good too.

Try putting the chick back under her tonight. I hope she kicks into Mom Hen mode for you!

I don't have too much hope....as she just kicked a marans out that was part way out of the shell. I gently put it with the other trying not to disturb the shell too much. I found a clip on desk lamp and clipped it on to the edge of a plastic storage bin. Hoping the marans will hang in there.....5 more to go.

The plastic storage bins work for several weeks--then they need something taller.

Good luck!

Sounds good you should also wrap a moist paper towel around the shell that is still with the chick to keep it from drying out since it is not in the humid environment any longer.

Thanks! I remembered that after putting it in there...so it is now covered by a damp paper towel.

Ugh....I have a feeling I will be up all night watching for kicked out chicks.....

I put my meat thermometer in the bin (there is some irony there somewhere), and it is up to 89.at chick level

No I am actually still limited to 5 hens. I never did well in math class. It is county but a small lot so I have restrictions.

Well that does sound a bit stressful. I find it odd that she is kicking them out. She doesn't like them disturbing her sit in.
