That was an amazing owl, but it must have been a biggie in order to carry of an 3 lb? Polish?

If I didn't have my Polish that I hatched from you in a covered run they would for sure be gone by now. They are beautiful easy pickin's for sure.
They actually have a covered run but since the hawks and the bob cats seem to have left I thought it was safe to leave the gate open to let the free range on the hillside. This polish was always the last to go to bed.. you know how teenagers can be. I guess she stayed out partying a little too long.

I used to live there, great place. maybe you could get a couple of big cardboard boxes to make them more secure and with the dark they should be quiet. I would use shavings in the bottom. If not you could always duct tape dark plastic bags on inside of shell to make it dark and use shavings in the bed of the truck.
Thank you, that is a great idea and I'm sure we will have plenty of boxes!

Well I just moved my chickens about a 15-20 minute drive and I borrowed the biggest pet carrier I have ever seen from the Placer SPCA. It held 11 chickens, but I could have squeezed the other two it without a problem. It was a warm day so I tried to give them a little room.

That worked really well for me and they were in the pet carrier ALL day as I had to move the coop too. My other option was going to be a large box with holes, but if you don't mind the poo, just stick them in the back of the truck with plenty of shavings or something down so they don't slip. I didn't have that option as I have an SUV with carpet in the back. You just have to be able to reach them in the back of the truck to transfer them into the new coop.

I just noticed you are in GV...... I would even be able to pick up the eggs so they don't have to be shipped!!!!

A great idea! I didn't know they had them to loan out. Last May we gave 2 large dog carriers away. I never thought to keep them for chickens. Thank you very much.

These are LF I believe:

Cardboard boxes with holes in the side. Put shavings in the bottom to keep them from sliding around. Bankers boxes work great too, but you have to tape the lid shut.
Thank you. These are such great ideas. I couldn't think of what to do. I am so thankful for BYC and the wonderful people who comment. The altitude for the chickens will be a lot lower so winters will be more mild. We know we will only be at this place for a year and a half as the house is on a hill. We have some concerns about the chickens free ranging on a hill but I think they will adapt. We are going to dig out an area for the coop to be more flat. I will keep everyone posted on our adventure.

Deb has that ever happened before? Wild! I got 10 yesterday and I only have 11 layers at the moment.

Brinsea question...I want one. The Mini Advanced looks good to me but I was wondering about stacking eggs in one. If I order 6, like I did this last time and the breeder sends me 12 can I just double stack then toss the no good nicks after candling? I would mostly use it only if a broody gave up mid way or if I wanted eggs that were only available for a specific time and I had no broody.

Thanks and I realized that poultry show is in Red Bluff, not Chico

So let me rephrase my question. Is that show open and is anyone planning to go. I seem to remember that several of you went to it last year but I wasn't sure.

The Brinsea octagon 20 will hold around 24 eggs(more for bantam eggs) and is easy to turn without a turner. It is designed to tilt each way on the sides. I have an Octagon 40 advance and the auto turner motor failed. I manually turned it until the new motor arrived and it is a breeze. You could easily stack more in it too.

To answer the mini question, I do not think it would stack well because of the way it is designed.

Go for a bigger incubator than you think you will need.

Out of 16 eggs I set (chicken) - 1 was fertile. 1. One. Uno. ONE??!!!! GAH! What in the world??? It was THE one egg from my favorite hen. She is an EE, that lays dark brown eggs with brown speckles. Covered by a CL roo. ONE egg. Dude. Somebody better go broody in the next 2 weeks! I saw it doing flippy doodles, there is no way I can destory a baby Dumpling (hen's name). I only set one of hers thinking - no way would hers be fertilized.

I set about 8 bantam (4 diff hens) eggs- that means my bantam roo is NOT doing his job. At all. And the rest were large fowl chicken eggs from about 6 other hens, covered by my CL boys (still young yet, not even 7 months old). They are mating, or attempting too. Mostly it looks like a WWF match with the roosters losing. :p

Anyone ever have that happen? ONE egg? :\

I just set 14 Silver Appleyard eggs. I need to test their hatchability. I am SO hoping I can sell these babies off once they hatch. I do not want to brood anything right now. lol

Did I mention ONE egg? Rooster fail!

So sorry for your loss. If the polish lives 200' away, the owl must have carried it. Not sure if hawks can carry a bird that far. I could be wrong though. I've had hawks kill hens, but never move them after. I've seen those automatic coop doors. They sound great, but look a little pricey.
The automatic doors are worth every single penny. I have the one from Foy's and it's fabulous.

Ugh. Better be looking for a feedstore nearby if that baby hatches. Otherwise it's gonna drive you batty!
