the good news is you don't have to be worried about them bringing in IB, Maraks, or any of the stuff like that you get from wild birds since you will have been exposed to it already if they are down the street for you. SO you are just being safe when you q. I would treat them for mites regardless if you see them, and worm or float test the poo. The just watch for any sniffles like a hawk and give her lots of treats and protein to grow those feathers back.
oh, I FOUND quartz/silver mica and tourmaline countertops for the peninsula. its from Brazil, was sold as soft granite. Granite and quartz are ( as Im sure you know) kissing cousins in terms of the actual minerals . They were mining the tourmaline out of these mines until the countertop craze. With the pieces that have low quality tourmaline they make more money polishing it ans selling it as giant slabs. You have to know what you are looking at to find this stuff. But if you go to the direct importers and look at the slabs there is amazing things. They had a few that had bloodstone in them, but mario and yve vetoed them. And I have the worst taste in the house, I get vetoed, lol.Well it sounds like you are having fun! I wonder if that stuff would look good on my 1942 soft-wood (pine) floors. They need something....
Lapis is copper based, Sodalite is too - but I believe both are neutral and non-toxic in that form. They used to use ground lapis for eye shadow in Egypt. Ty-D Bol does a beautiful Turquoise - but is probably toxic...
There is Quartz with Tourmaline that is pink and white (from So.Cal too).. and mica for silver flecks.. Not sure if its big enough for counter tops though. You could try Lepidolite (Africa, purple or blue with pink Tourmaline and mica flecks) - that comes in huge chunks sometimes but you better save your pennies for several years!
I think Bloodstone would be too dark, most of the stuff I have seen is super dark green, almost black - not much red in there at all.
P.S. - I love rocks....
Hey thanks, and Ron too for the advice. I'll have to pick up some sevin (sp?) dust then, but I should have it around anyway, as well as do some research on the float test. It's great having all your experience that a new chicken keeper like me can tap into! I guess I'll have a white egg layer along with the brown and blue.
So if you can picture a hen colored like a dark-bodied Welsummer but with white ears and lays white eggs, what breed could she be? (Sorry I have no pics of her yet.)
Ron,
Ron,
your birds always look so healthy and fabulous! Do you give vitamins, Omega Oils? They just look so great all of the time
