California - Northern

Hi All...

My babies (my first ever hatch) are now 6 weeks old and fully feathered. There are 5 large fowl mixes. Considering the weather we are having right now, when would I be able to put them outside? They would have their own area in the coop with 3 sides and the roof fully enclosed. But, there's no electricity, so no lamp outside.

They are in our shop at night with one lamp. But, I bring them out during the day to enjoy the sunshine.

They can go out now. Start by weening them off of the light at night for several days and then put them out. They will be fine at 6 weeks old and fully feathered. They might act scared when the light is removed tough.

They can be quite funny too.

Greetings, SilkiesForEver and Northern California!

Can you please tell me what goes on at the show? I have never been to one and am excited at the prospect of being able to buy some chickens there.

I started with 4 chicks in July 2012 and now have over 30.

From what I understand, there are 3000 birds entered this year. Stockton is the biggest and some would say the best show in California. You can walk through the barns to look at the birds. A few cages will have notes on them letting you know that the birds are for sale. There is a sale barn where you can purchase birds. You can also pre-purchase birds and pick them up at the show. Here is a link to the Stockton pre-sale forum.

Crossed together?

Crossed back to the silkie roo
Theoretically 50% of the back cross will be silkies. Combs likely to still be a problem. I will tell you better after I see hhow my creamy/blue egg silkie project goes.
OK how fun for you! I don't care about combs haha I am picturing a MF with silkie feathers and I am getting excited about it.

Good luck with your project!

My project...short term, is Delaware over California Grey. Pretty sure they produce a sex link but only got one to hatch last time, a cockerel with a white dot on his head. I want to know if the girls have the dot. The girls will be dynamite layers. I am going to be eating the boy in March. It would be great if they created a dual purpose hybrid.

Would the eggs be white like the CG or Brown like the Dels?

Incubating eggs is boring!

I've had those eggs in the incubator for a full 24 hours and have not heard a peep. No movement, nothing. They just sit there.
Ha! Just wait until the last 3 days. You'll be going NUTS! And after the hatch, you will have a very sore bum from sitting in front of the bator with your nose to the glass.

Looks more like he injured his comb, or someone picked at his waddles and the scrapes have scabbed over... just a guess. But it doesn't look like pox, IMO.
I agree, some sort of injury/pecking. Definitely doesn't look like pox.

Thanks so much for the information and the link to the forum. I can't wait to go to the show!

Without incriminating myself, I would like to reiterate how much I appreciate the members of this thread. On one of the other threads I'm subscribed to, they don't seem particularly bright. Just makes me want to bang my head on the wall sometimes!

Those puffy cheeks are tricky to pass on. A weird amount of my oes got them from the mum. Pick both roo and hens with them if you want it in offspring
