Kind of a stupid question but short of a saddle what can i put on hens/ do to help keep their feathers in them. our RIR is mating with hens but our buff orps are being plucked by him basically im gonna clip his nails a little but the hens backs are bare and hes drawn blood from their backs

I've heard they're supposed to be further away so they don't see hens and fight each other. Never tried it before, but that's the plan. Hopefully "the plan" will be how it turns out
so the pics of the penedesencas looked ALOT like CL. But didn't you have some black ones too? Sorry I can't remember. What if I had another color not so similar to CL's. Would they look much different then? And is it just the males that are hard to distinguish at hatch or pullets too?

Oh yes I have black penedesenca and white empordanesa too I am hatching some silver ameraucana x black penedesenca in a few weeks to

I'm jealous as heck that you all are going to meet eachother at the Stockton Show. I had planned to come, but my husband finally made plans for us to have the weekend away from the kids. The first one in 15 years of marriage!

If he's already drawing blood when mating it's time to separate him from the girls and allow them to heal and re-feather if you don't you could end up having hens with staff infection (from the Roos feet putting manure into the open wounds). If you don't separate at least use the saddles and spray the hens backs with "blu-kote" to close up the wounds and prevent other birds from pecking open wounds.

I took one of the hens out to look at her and they arent big wounds but you can see where shes been scratched and the scratches are healing up. i also clipped his nails down so they arent as sharp. is there a way to make a "homemade" saddle for them?

I ordered saddles online. They came quick and were $3.50 each. Probably easier then making them. And priced right.

Sorry about your girls! My Cock Bird we rehomed use to break off my poor girls feathers. I hateded it so I got the saddles.

Absolutely!!! Just do a search on the BYC main page and you will get quite a few people who've made them at home and there are patterns posted for homemade ones on there too.

The worst one I have for jumping the fence is a blue Marans. The Amelias stayed in the chicken yard.

The fence is a 6 ft. fence though.With a 4 ft. fence you would need to clip one wing for a lot of Breeds.

Orpingtons no though. The Amelias are amazing olive green egg layers.....
